Get a second 7950 or a single GTX 780?

I'm looking to get a new PC sometime next year as long as I have the money to do so.

I was looking to just use my current RAM and then should I keep my Sapphire HD 7950 Vapor-X OC and get a 2nd one, or should I just discard it and buy a EVGA GeForce GTX 780 ACX Superclock.

So the choice is have:

1x EVGA GeForce GTX 780 ACX Superclock
vs
2x Sapphire HD 7950 Vapor-X OC.

The processor will be a i7-4770.

And I will want to play Arma 3 with very high graphics and get good FPS, so you can use that as a platform.

I'll also possibly be running two 22" Samsung LED Monitors.

So which would you choose?

I'd go for the HD7950 crossfire option - it's cheap and powerful. It gives great performance. If you have decent airflow and a suitable PSU you shouldn't have any issue.

Alternatively. Wait til sept. 25th and see what AMD offers with their new line up of cards.

Also ArmA 3 is pretty CPU intensive as far as I have seen.

cpu you have ?
4770K ^^

I would opt for the 780. 2x 7950's will benchmark faster but all of the SLI/Xfire setups I have owned have been beset with niggles. From graphical glitches within certain games to running hot under desktop mode, plus the odd suspend & resume issue, I much prefer a single card/GPU solution.

Both options should play Arma fine on dual 1920x1080/1200 monitors.

I'll be buying a i7-4770. The case will be air cooled in a 600T case.

Obviously prices will change when the time comes, I'm looking around March 2014, unless I should wait a lil longer for newer components, I'm not really sure when things come out etc xD

The PSU will be a Corsair AX760.

Two 7950s are way ahead of a 780, and there are very few issues any more.

I definitely wouldn't touch a 780 now. People are more likely getting rid of them now that the new AMD GPU is coming.

Though I'd add a HIS 7950, due to its rear exhaust.

I have that case. If you do go the crossfire route make sure you grab a pair of the HIS 7950 Ice-Q's. That case is not the best on airflow cooling (unless you have the side grill on and 4x120mm fans attached) so having gpu's that dump their heat out of the rear of the case will help greatly. Another nifty trick i learned is that you can make the temps even lower and improve airflow by removing some of the other pci brackets at the back around the two cards.

Surely overtime the 780's will get better due to newer drivers etc.

Also I currently have FPS issues on Arma 3 with my current rig, I'm blaming it down to my CPU, but I only get around 8-10 fps on a Wasteland server, and singleplayer 40fps.

AMD Pheniom II X6 1055T
Sapphire HD 7950 Vapor-X OC.

@LtMatt - Nothing is set in stone yet, I'm sure plenty will change before March 2014 comes xD

So far it's just a benchmark build of what I'd be willing to spend if I can get the money together.

So I'm sure other cases will come out that I'll like, as I also like the NZXT Phantom 820 :D

Lol. Definitely your cpu. :D

This PC has served me 4-5 years now, so I'm happy. The only thing I've added is the new GFX better RAM and a second HDD :P

Ideally I'd like this new PC to hit the same mark before needing to change over.

This is the spec I've got so far:

CPU: i7-4770.
Mobo: Asus Z87-A.
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Blue - 8GB - 1600MHz *I think*.
Graphics Card: *Being discussed xP*.
SSD: 180GB Intel 530.
HHD1: 500GB VeloCiraptor.
HDD2: 640GB WD Caviar Green.
PSU: Corsair AX760 *Platinum*.
CPU Cooler: Super Quiet Tripple Copper Heatpipe **************

Case-wise I will spend upto £150.

Arma 3 is a poorly optimised game that is very cpu limited as far as i understand it. If that is going to be your only played game a 780 is probably a better choice. If the game has crap optimisation, throwing a multi gpu setup at it is never a good idea. Just look at Rome total war 2. :D

I currently have those 2 HDD's they'll be moving over to the new PC xD

Other games will be the likes of GTA 5 *when it happens*, Battlefield 4, Football Manager 2014+, the high end games basically.

Ok. Still, I'd just buy a HIS 7950 to add to your 7950. Clock them at 1100MHz and get 7970 GHz crossfire performance.

Arma 3 needs an i7/8350 clocked up to do all right. But the 780 would be silly to buy now.

Also, don't bother with fast HDDs. Just get a bigger SSD and a regular HDD.

Arma 3 with 7970 CF (which is the same as 7950 overclocked):

You know what i tell a lie. Crossfire appears to be working pretty well in this game. Go for the dual 7950's and overclock them a bit to say 1100/1500.

7990 = 7950x2 Providing you add a small overclock

7990 - 45% faster than a 780 @1080p

7990 - 65% faster than a 780 @1600p

Stop the press!!

Gamegpu tested the final build of the game (rather than the beta benched above) the other day and also used newer AMD drivers aka Catalyst 13.10. More performance it seems and now faster than the 690 was at 1080p. This game seems like a bit of a performance hog though so extra grunt might be handy.

I can imagine how excited you got seeing that. If only I had a gif...
