Chances are those AMD GPU's are going to be pretty expensive

If they come in at £450, it'd be doable on this budget.

Otherwise the 7970 can't be beaten below that price.

I really can't imagine them being worth it.

lol, but martini is right, it is an extra 200 quid which means skimping on performance somewhere, tbh would the better option not be to get a 7970 and then if he needs more fps then add a second later down the line

It wouldn't mean skimping, it's a generous budget and somewhat flexible.

The 7970 is by far the best option if the new one is too much though.
