Friend buying a 50inch TV

Going over PC/curry’s world tomorrow with a friend, he’s asked for my help to chose one. I’ve only ever bought 40 -42 inch TV’s so only ever gone LED. However he’s looking to get a 50inch TV. From what I remember when going 50inch and over you get a plasma? Is this the case?

Any advice on what he can get or rather what we should look out for?

I have a 50" plasma and have had it for 5+ years. when whatching HD its fine but on normal ITV for example it can start to pixelate. The TV also gives off quite a bit of heat.
Also we wanted to change our front room around and found that the TV would only fit in the one place.

My advice would be to get a LED over plasma and if that means going slightly smaller then its worth it.

Plasma over LED for any size :)

Smoother, deeper, not super bright, no real image burn issues anymore. Only LED if you're not fussed about the quality or you wish for it to be in a room with lots of light/reflections.

SD scaling is really down to the manufacturers tech rather than panel I think.

richer sounds or seven oaks offer great value and advice in my opinion, they have a great range and comprehensive knowledge. I'd go to them rather than Currys/PC World as they price match online prices and offer 5 year guarantee.

+1 for Richer Sounds, their price matching puts them as the number 1 choice for mainstream A/V equipment.

Jesus times have changed :( bought my 50 inch plasma something like 6 years ago for 1400 pounds....
Bought mine 4 years ago for ~£500 (just under I think). LG though, not Panasonic... 65" soon!! :D

John Lewis also do price match and a lot of their TVS come with a 5 yr warranty.

I bought a Panny 46" plasma from them a couple of yrs ago and its been perfect, GT30 model which i think is now discontinued but if you can get one, its a brilliant set. I did look at LEDs and i perferred the Plasma over the LEDS.

Sorry, but enough links to Johnlewis, the site is bloody awful.

As for the question, plasma without a doubt. I went from a 37" lcd to 50" plasma, the quality is astounding.

Same and same.

I wonder if you can still find GT50's about?

they sold out month's ago

and the E8000 is basically samsung's version of the same tv for similar money

it has free 3d glasses, free built in skype camera, better smart tv, etc, etc.

all at the expense of a small difference black levels, but then the samsung panel doesn't have all the issues the panny panels have had like banding, 50hz bug, etc.

the E8000 is the one to go for atm and this is coming from a GT50 owner
