Hi Guys,

I Need some help and advice on some Corsair Fans I will be ordering for a new case (Corsair Carbide 540 High Airflow ATX Cube Case).

I was looking at getting the SP120 Performance Series 120mm's.

However I then thought I would want to connect it up to a fan controller, so will I need the PWM's?.

I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with these fan's? And can advice me on the best way to cool my PC but keep noise level down.

I wont be water cooling so it will be fan based only.

My Idea so far for this case -

Back - Corsair AF140 Quiet Series 140mm Cooling Fan x 1

Front - Corsair SP120 Performance Series 120mm Cooling Fan x 3

Top - Corsair SP120 Performance Series 120mm Cooling Fan x 2

Any Ideas or Help would be appreciated

Cheers

Need more info tbh mate, i take it your not intending to use the performance fans on your rad/cooler? and if not dont bother with silly high RPM fans for just your case when there are a wealth of better (and quiet) options.

Does the corsair case come with a fan controller, are you able to control 3pin non pwm fans off your mobo etc

I am intending to get a CPU Water Cooler in the future.

Sadly the case dose not :(.
I currently have a Gigabyte EX58-UD3R Motherboard, which i think comes with 2 SYS_FAN Headers, 1 for CPU. I was going to get:

NZXT Sentry LXE Touch Screen External Fan Controller

To control the fans

PWM controlled fans running off your motherboard are the easiest way to control fans. As the CPU gets hotter the fans start turning faster. It doesn't require user intervention so will take care of itself. Once set up you can just forget about it.

I run a small mixture of PWM fans and some 3 pin fans controlled via PWM.

The SP's are static pressure fans, which means they work well with heatsinks and radiators.. using them as case fans isn't as good as using the AF's as case fans..

So i am guessing PWM Fans are controlled from the Motherboard through software e.c.t. If i was to get a CPU Water-Cooler in the future do you recommend the SP's for this? and What about Push and Pull?

For the case fan's i will stick with the AF120's, Whould you go for performance or low noise?

P.S Thanks for your answers

Would you go for performance or low noise?

Depends which one of them is most important too you..

I had the quiet edition ones as my PC lives next to my face, but the performanace ones won't be much louder, itll only be the noise of the extra air coming through the fans really. :)

If you use PWM SP fans and a nice PWM 8-way hub like Swiftech the only time the fans will spin fast is when you are working your system hard. It normal use the fans spin slowly just like your CPU cooler fans do now. An advantage of SP fans is you don't need exhaust fan as much. The SP fans will have no problem pushing air on through the case and out. Only possible problem is making sure the heated exhaust from coolers doesn't mix with cool intake air.. and that is a problem to be dealt with regardless; with or without exhaust fans. ;)

Oh ok, so the Splitter will react only to one signal?, So if for say I plug the CPU into the main channel, if it gets hotter all fans connected to the splitter will speed up according to the CPU Fan?

Edit: Obviously the speed will only change if they are PWM's

Simple answer. Yes

All fans run slow when system idles and speed up to supply air needed as load / heat increase.

Right now I have my sig rig is 1m away. I cannot hear it idling at 750rpm and have to concentrate to hear it at 950rpm.. At full 100% load it runs 950-1050rpm @ 44-48c

Awesome Stuff thanks for your help :).

I think I have two options to go:

4 x NON PWM For Intake into the case and exhaust connected to a Fan controller. Then 2x PWM Fans connected to my Mobo or to a Splitter for the Rad.

Or

5 x PWM Fans connected to a Splitter for Rad and Intake and 1 X NON PWM for Exhaust

Do these sound like a good option?

I'm pro-PWM control on everything.
If exhaust fan is behind CPU cooler than it can idle like the rest and speed up as cooler does to remove cooler's heated air.

Here's a 540 with PWM control. You don't need to use Akasa fans.

Tealc and myself love automatic fan controlled systes. :D

That is an awesome read :). Thanks for posting it, I think you converted me to Full PWM's :p.

Now just need to decide what fan's, I have read about the Corsair fans not being the best but not the worst.

What is your favourite fans + what have you got currently installed?

Once again thanks for the replies :)

I could give you many more recommendations from PWM converts. Everyone who has gone to automatic control loves it. Tealc has been making PWM to analog adapters many people so they can use PWM control with 3pin fans.

I like Thermalright TY-14x series fans. That's what I'm presently using for case and cooler. 3x TY-140 intakes and 2x TY-143 on red TC14PE cooler cus the fan color looks good on cooler. :D No exhaust fans but have a duct from TC14PE to rear with vent grill removed. Don't really need the duct with the grill removed but was using it before grill was removed so just kept it.

Will be building a Phanteks Enthoo Primo hopefully latter part of next month and will use their fans in it.

If I was buying now I would get TY-147 fans because they are black/white and there is nothing else that I know of even close in quality and performance in the £5.99 price range.. not even at twice the price.

mmmm, I am now looking at the Swiftech H220 CPU Liquid Cooling Kit - Comes with the free splitter. Seeing as i will be looking at a WC CPU in the future, Tempting.

Have to second the recommendation on the Thermalright TY fans. I have one on my graphics card and its really quite good. It does get a bit noisy if I crank up the duty cycle but in normal use I don't notice it and I've never noticed a PWM tick from it even despite it being mounted horizontally. Shame they don't do them in 120mm size as my case fans can't take the extra diameter.

Yer i seem to be finding it hard to find a decent PWM fan with a 4 pin connector at 120mm.
