Absolutely terrible. I just can't fathom how a team of writers sat round a table and decided that was a reasonable way to end it.
Bits just made no sense, like leaving Harrison with Hannah, why not Jamie? The scene where Harrison says he loves Hannah was ludicrous.
A far better way would have been Dexter being found out when he killed Saxon. How could Batista & Quinn still not get it? There's a small hint Quinn got it but didn't give it away as it was revenge for Deb but it was so badly written it wasn't clear.
I'm going to say it.... this ending made Lost look good.

I thought that was a good episode. I even trickled a 'something in my eye' tear for Deb.
What did you expect guys? What would have pleased you? Seriously what would have been more palatable? Whichever way it went, not everyone would be happy. It's done.

Basically Dexter waking up in an execution chamber, and the whole series having flashed before his eyes in the time before the lethal injection took hold, being watched from the gallery by all of his victims. Also weird, and also wouldn't have pleased a lot of people, but at least could have been made in to a little less of a cop out than the actual ending.

Exactly i really wanted Skeletor Quinn and Dexter to have a couple of lines of dialogue that wrapped that entire story up.
This would have been much better, things I'd have liked to see:
Deb not dying, just felt like this was done so they could avoid killing Dexter.
Dexter being killed, executed, killing himself. Anything but going off to be a lumberjack!
Harrison being with his family in Miami not with a fugitive on the run in a foreign country.
Dexter has always had story arcs that go nowhere but this season was full of them from Masuka's daughter, Quin's failed promotion, even the whole brain surgeon/Vogel arc didn't actually go anywhere after a vaguely promising start. Also, what happened to Harry? He just disappeared in the last episode?!
Where was Masuka in the final episode? The storyline with his daughter was just a complete filler after all.

I read something earlier and was reminded she told Dexter that if she ever ended up like the Camilla Figg character (records supervisor who was euthanized by Dexter), then she wanted Dexter to let her die or maybe finish her off.
I had a huge issue with the dumping of Deb at sea and the last scene. The whole 'will they or won't they' find out about Dexter wasn't taken advantage of by the writers.

I thought the season was easily the poorest since 3, but the ending was interesting and I really didn't see him abandoning his son and Hannah. I don't quite get the hate from it from you lot, it ended on a right downer and everyone loves sad endings. I though Vogil (sp?) was a really irritating character and I'm not sure they should have messed with the legacy of Harry. Still, a couple of good old Dexter twists in there.
The penultimate episode was really dumb though, it was almost James Bond-esque... aha let's tie him up and leave him there... argh
Having the estate agent back was a bit of an easter egg for the fans. I'm glad they name dropped Ash and Cody... they have been long forgotten about, would have been strange to just ignore them. Also, the daughter was just wrapping things up for Masuka, showing things were on the up for him.
To be fair to Dexter it's not been appalling, it's just been totally overshadowed recently by Heissenberg and co.
I'll remember it fondly

I was certain there was going to be some incestual soft porn between Masuka and his daughter.
Argh! How could they leave that out.
On a more serious note that ended far better than I was expecting it to. Getting all depressd/suicidal over Deb and taking the boat out into the storm to finally protect people from himself was fitting.
Although they could have taken it in so many different directions. A poor last season for sure. At the very least things should have actually completely unraveled for Dexter to expose him. The miraculous ways he kept getting away with it and getting Debs to keep his secret were tenously plausible at best.
Unsure whether the woodchucker bit was needed (Did Vince Gilligan take the p out of this in the latest Talking Bad?), but hey ho, maybe we'll get a few straight to DVD movies somewhere down the line.

I don't have a huge issue with where Dexter ended as a character. It was brutally depressing but understandable and on some level that sacrifice was very moving and seemed fitting. The construction of the season however, mainly the terrible terrible CGI and the writing left a lot to be desired.
It also bothered me how much air time the likes of masuka had. They have only ever been prop pieces to write dexter/debra around and I struggle to believe anyone really cared to see him learning about his daughter.
Ultimately, I will remember the show fondly. Both MCH and JC are amazing actors and they played characters I really loved watching. Like any show it had it's highs and lows but without a doubt it remains one of the good ones.
I just wish they had had someone overseeing it from start to finish with a clear direction.

That would have been so much better.
Not sure how the ending can be defended at all. Yes, there's always going to be differences on what people wanted to happen to Dexter but that aside there was no closure for most of the cast.
Also you've got the whole dark side to Dexter and him going away to not hurt people, this has never been emphasised in the series at all. Rita dies, Dokes dies, La Guerta dies and Dexter still keeps on killing, suddenly with Debs he just gives up? What would Harry's take have been on it all? Dexter was never a tragedy like Breaking Bad it's more of a dark comedy, so the bizarre "sad" Dexter ending didn't fit with the premise of the show.
Couldn't they have left Harrison with Cody and Astor's grandparents and have Hannah watch over him? Also, did they drop the idea of Cody's serial killer tendancies that they toyed with in the early seasons?
The ending sounds more like a cheap way to setup possible spin-off's in the future with Cody and Astor being Dexter/Debra and Harrison being the evil brother as a repeat of the first season.
I was also hoping for more involvment with the rest of the cast like an ending where Dexter being caught and the series is basically Dexter confessing his crimes to a priest before being given a lethal injection.

yep open ended for a massive cash in for dex when hes cash strapped
terrible could have made it so explosive and really entertaining. hell be returning at some point guaranteed !
the deb dying part pretty lame , the ending poor and the woodyard wasn't even needed unless there is a new season down the road. having him just ride into the hurricane would have been better than that.
think the series should have ended around 3 or 4 and i like dexter a lot but a lot became diluted and series 7 is worst of the whole lot.

I thought it was better than it had been and not too bad ending. Could have been a lot worse. I do, like others, think a few bits were a little silly but meh... I can see another season or a film in a few years. The end reminded me of 24, when jack faked his death and disappeared to protect those around him 
Oh and seen deb dying a mile away.. TBH not really bothered by it, she had ran her course as a character..

I think that after how the season has gone so far there just wasn't enough there to produce an epic last episode, it wasn't terrible but there were just so many holes in the storyline. The fact that if bad weather is coming you can apparently do what you want and not get caught. It's just a shame that the last killer Dexter murdered was such a weak character, comparing him to John Lithgow's character is truly criminal, its a shame that season wasn't the last. I feel though that 6 out of the 8 seasons were very good and I will remember Dexter for that.

Why kill Deb?...she deserved the happy ending, the story didn't need for her to die, it only served for Dex's absolutely pathetic and terrible "realisation" that the ones he hurts the most, are the ones he's closest too, gee..REALLY DEX...****ING REALLY?..when your wife was brutally murdered and your son left in a pool of her blood, ya didn't have any kind of ****ing notion that this was how things where going to be.
