Asus HD 7970 Matrix Platinum vs GTX 680

The 7970 is about three months older than the 680. The 770 is just a 680 with a core block boost and slightly faster memory modules making it about, give or take, 5% faster than a 680.
Yea. Not only that, Nvidia witch-hunted their own partners threaten them to lock down the voltage tweaking option on the GTX680 or else :o). They effectively "stole" performance (or overclocking headroom at least) from the GTX680 to give to the GTX770 :p

He means that like, the HD7000 came out in December 2011 which is like two years ago! and the GTX600 came out in March 2012, which is only a year ago, then math and stuffs and BAM! 2 years old and 1 year old!

(Just in case I didn't make it obvious enough that is NOT hwo I see it :P)

ocuk must adore you ;)

I'm thinking of selling my 1 month old 670 for two Matrix Platinums, but I'm not sure they'd fit on my board or if I should just buy one of the new ones and stick to one card.

Go for a HD 7970 Matrix Platinum, it is a bit of a non contest up against a GTX 680.

I own a couple of Matrix Platinums and also use a few NVidia cards.

i really would have. but as mentioned before, my psu has no 8 pin connectors. only 6 pins and i dont think i can get away with it and dont have money to invest in a new psu as well :(

ok guys so ive been researching still. i will wait for AMD's announcement but so far it looks like im getting this.

it's a little over budget but is overclocked out of the box (good for me with the warranty) and beats 680 and 7970.

You don't invalidate a warranty by overclocking. I'd put my neck on the line to say that a bog standard overclocked 7970 is beating a bog standard overclocked 770 in most games. It's also cheaper.

+1 agreed.

You can use MSI Afterburner or Evga Precision X to overclock your card and it doesn't invalidate your warranty. Plus I would agree a 7970 is a better buy than an Nvidia 770 gtx.

Not often i agree with Rusty but he's right. :D

so overclocking wont void warranties??

in that case, which card is the best option and doesnt require 2 x 8 pin connectors?

No manufacturer really has a policy so to speak on overclocking - it's just if your card fails for whatever reason there's no possible way they can tell it's been overclocked as long as you overclock via software and don't flash any BIOS.

ok thats sweet. while i have your attention, what is the cheapest psu (over 700watts) with 2 x 8pin connectors?

i really want the Matrix...

thanks for these. how do they fair at lower res? i currently play at 1680x1050 and might upgrade to 1080 or 1200 max.

because if im honest im expecting the 7970 to be much better at higher res because of the mem bandwith

Most reviews i have read oint to the 770 being faster at 1080p.

The 7970 ghz generally pulls a few more frames at very high resolutions with lots of AA but in a lot of modern games framerates arent very playable by then anyway.

the 7950's/7970's strengths lie in crossfire/multi monitor/very high res situations due to the increased bandwith and vram.
