Is there a Land Rover/4x4/Offroaders thread?

Bought myself this a few weeks ago. 1999 TD5 90, it's been remapped and de-cat so goes and sounds epic. Fitted the lights and snorkel myself. Also made a bench seat for the back. And the best bit? £650 insurance on a 2.5ltr for a 21 year old!!

How much was that?

I was looking at Defenders the other week, and noticed they aren't really cheap.

£4k for late 80s / early 90 models.

When I was down in North Devon a few weeks back, I took it up a pretty steep "Unsuitable for vehicles" track. Got some decent wheel articulation going on.
I was most impressed with my 2mpg average when I got to the top.

I do love those "unsuitable for motor vehicle" roads, especially in Winter.

:D

Only unsuitable for the wrong type of motor vehicle, clearly... This one was stranded having slipped into the hedge judging by the tyre tracks :D

Nice. That's a hell of a hill to park on! Hope you don't rely on the handbrake too much :D

There's definitely more 4x4 crew on here than I thought, Salisbury plain laning day?

Nice 90 but you need to remove those steps before they get ripped off & cause damage.

Thats on my list of things to do, but, being a short-arse makes getting in and out a struggle without them on, Im working on changing the mounts to make them quick release.

hang on hang on hang on. Whats up with all the landys?? i was under the impression they were super unreliable, or was that just the freelanders?? Have i been stupidly misinformed?

Myself i've got a Navara, taken it across some fields, thats about it haha. Wouldn't mind something a tad smaller, as its an absolute beast!

No you're right, generally they are. But they're so good they're worth it ;)

Just having a browse back through the pics and I've only just realised where your pics were taken Orch..

Hahaha
That would have been the Glos meet I missed then!
You were all in my bit of the country that day but I was at work.

Oh and I finished my steps off up there too :D

I think TCR 4x4 got the idea for the meet up there from that video I put up. ;)

You're dead right mate! Great little playground that! Although my steps and winch bumper might not agree :D

I'm still surprised that we meet each other in two completely different corners of the internet :D

Shame you couldn't make it that day, was good fun! The view up there was quite a shocker, amazing!

Hopefully we'll meet for a brew at the next glos or SP outing!

The big steel ARB bars are very good if you hit things. The alloy bars are pointless, hit anything substantial and they just bend in on themselves so you end up with knackered bonnet/bumper/wings anyway.

Couple of grand for an ARB bar depending on make model and what bar you get.

Can hit 50-75kg roos and come out without a scratch almost. If you hit on the side it can push in but then you can get side rails which mate up to the bar to stop this.

The only problem you can come across is hanging all that weight over the front end, affects the tracking and can cause certain chassis to crack.

The Hiluxes are fine as are the new Rnagers. The VW Amaroks front springs are too soft, causes the tyres to get chewed up and you can't adjust them as standard.

Had our Land Cruiser on a weigh bridge today, all tooled up for work with drilling gear, half full of fuel with two people on board, and about 250kg of spoil for the tip. 3.8T all up... It's no wonder it sinks in soft stuff and does 18L per 100km!

Couple of videos i made to get us going.

Got my gopro stuck to the side showing a bit of articulation. Not too shabby i reckon given the suspension is fairly stock. (well stock weight/height). Like normal the gopro wide FOV takes away the height of things.

This one was taken at the same place. Basically that hill is approx 30 odd feet high and the guy went up, aborted due to loss of traction and then rolled back down on the brakes and started to turn... oops. rolled it. The funny thing was that it was his mates disco who wasnt in the vehicle and was unawares over the other side of the quarry. he had a complete sense of humour failure when he came over lol :p
