Bold claims, lets all hope its true. (unless you're a titan owner i guess)

The red team says that with Mantel, its new flagship GPU will “ridicule” the GeForce Titan

With AMD unveiling its new series of GPUs, many gamers want to know how well it performs, namely against Nvidia’s flagship GeForce GTX Titan graphics card.

We had a chance to sit down with AMD Product Manager Devon Nekechuck to see how AMD’s new top dog R9 290X stacks up against the green team’s best single-GPU offering. According to Nekechuck, even though the R9 290X uses a 438 square mm die, which is significantly smaller than the Titan’s 550 sq. mm GK110 offering, it “will definitely compete with the GTX 780 and Titan.” When we asked what this means in real-world terms, he stated, “with Battlefield 4 running with Mantel (AMD’s new graphics API), the card will be able to ‘ridicule’ the Titan in terms of performance.”

When we asked him what he meant by “ridicule,” he simply stated that it will run Battlefield 4 “much faster than the Titan.” Again, this is provided that you run the game using AMD's Mantel API, which is set to launch in December.

While no pricing has been announced for AMD's high-end GPU just yet, It is worth mentioning that Nekechuck did confirm to us that the company does not plan to release single-GPU cards in the $1,000 price range because AMD thinks that is such a small, niche market. When you consider that the GeForce Titan runs for one grand, it’s safe to assume that it will be a fair bit cheaper than $1K. Rumors abound the event are that the R9 290X will retail at around the 780 price point, which currently hovers around $650. May we see Titan+ performance for less than 780 price from AMD? Only time will tell.

Stay tuned to Maximum PC for pricing, release date, and benchmarks when we get one in

surely it won't take long for nv to adapt titan for mantle too?

Maybe they won't even bother. Will be interesting to see how the Nvidia PR handle this. Will they even want to adapt? Nvidia don't consider the consoles important. Frostbite is going to be a major game engine with massive AAA titles though. I don't know where this is going to go, but interesting times ahead i think.

AMD are competing with Nvidia on GPU's, Intel on CPU's and now Microsoft on game API's, takes a brave man to stack that kind of deck against themselves... I hope this doesn't blow up in their face.

Ok now how about performance without Mantle? Think AMD are taking a gamble that Mantle will gain traction.

Its been an interesting week. SteamOS and now Mantle.

The question is will this open up a future for better linux games? bypassing dx11 with an api of decent quality on blockbuster titles with linux support could turn the need for windows on its head

OGL can do anything D3D can, the reason D3D took over after Y2K was because D3D had caught up and was easier for developers to work with (plus thye didn't care about OSX/Linux at that point).

I really really do not think that GPU designers should be involved in API, it's just going to be another Glide vs OpenGL scenario which is bad for the consumer.

maybe so, but at least AMD are doing what every other company is unwilling to do... innovate and push the boundaries. They must be applauded for that, because of Nvidia had their way the market would stagnate..

Mantle shouldn't be specific to any GPU, just like DirectX and OpenGL.

They're just layers that sit between the graphics hardware and the games. There's no reason that DirectX couldn't run on Linux and OS X for example, it's just that it's proprietary to Microsoft and completely closed.

AMD and nvidia drivers support both DirectX and OpenGL at the moment. AMD will be adding Mantle to those two on Windows and Linux. So if you're running a game that uses Mantle or OpenGL, it won't matter which OS you use.

I assume that Mantle will not be 'open' prior to DICE actually implementing it into the BF4 engine. Even if Nvidia wanted to utilise it they probably won't be able to until next year.

Mantle will be coming to PC first in December with BF4 and other platforms in the future, so it might work on SteamBox's come 2014 on Mantle supported games. Which to be honest I think at the moment will only be high end PC games, stuff like The Witcher, Dragon Age, BF4 and any other high end AMD Gaming Evolved title.

Mantle will probably only work for AMD cards, Nvidia would have to make their own solution to maximise the use of the cards architecture.
