ASDA Costume apology.

Yea lets bash the mentally disabled, great fun, come on lads!

Lets also bring out an outfit incorporating a wheelchair and call it "crippled retard" shouldn't of been born a sensitive disabled person if they were going to complain about it.

Maybe if they spent more time looking for work instead of being disabled and complaining tax payers money wouldn't have to support them and we could all have our fun.

What's the point in disabled people living anyway if they are just going to ruin everyone else's lives.

Mentally disabled people disgust me even more because I can't see anything wrong with them, they are probably just making it up and should just get over it.

Come on lads! Whaaaaeeeey feels so great to pick on the disabled!

Sounds like we need a hurfdurf costume.

PC gone mad.
Clearly those that slice people up with butchers knives are in no sane state of mind, and that's what they were getting at.

I saw some really bad costumes called police man and fire fighter that made them look like YMCA members why aren't fire fighters and police offices up in arms for being made to look gay :p

I am classed as disabled due to mental conditions.
I realise these outfits are harmless.

It's probably not even mental people in uproar but people who think they need to defend mental people because we are not capable of defending ourselves....

Hence why people are complaining, the comparison of someone being mentally ill being the equivalent of a monster from a horror franchise.
what's more scary mentally ill psychopath or hollywood movie?

A large multinational corporation should know better than to produce merchandise making light of mental illness (or any illness), it's a poor choice from a PR perspective.

How about a "cancer costume" with complimentary breast lumps?, or a chemo-hat!, or wait is that one not OK because many of you have family members who have died of cancer? - is it OK to joke & make fun for kids toys of some illnesses but not others?, that would be hypocritical.

Read the thread, someone with a mental illness has already complained.

Negatively stereotyping mental illness may not effect you directly, but it's certainly not harmless.

That's nuts...

It's mental.

This whole thing is daft. People with mental health issues have been known to go on violent rampages. The costume was actually a fair representation of the extreme end of the mental health spectrum.

Asda buckling on this issue and the Co-Op buckling on Lads Mags - all examples of just how pathetic our society has become.

I don't see it as stereotyping mental illness in any way.

"Mental Patient", "Psycho Ward" -- They aren't social stereotypes in these presentations; they're adoptions of Hollywood archetypes. Pure fantasy, 80's-style slasher movie nonsense is all that it is. People need to stop being so sensitive about it, and realise that it isn't going to cause the downfall of society. It's stupid fun.

Of course they aren't going to come out with "Wheelchair cripple", "Cancer sufferer", "Chemo patient" or whatever, as those are straight-up hurtful social representations. That's a notion, and comparison, so hyperbolic and off-base that it's nigh-on incredulous. Calm down, dear: It's only Halloween.
