US: Dexter Season 8 (contains spoilers)

I can see why they killed Deb off, she was his last tie to Miami and it gave Dexter a moment to look at what happens to those he loves and should be protecting. I know he should have realised this when Rita died etc but those things happened to an earlier Dexter who didn't believe he could feel like a real person, or at least the 'human' part of him was only embryonic and there was enough 'dark passenger' left to enable him to switch off the hurt.

With Deb's death though he is now an almost fully-formed human and is feeling emotions that he is not used to. Hence his pain and sadness at the loss and his realisation and decision that Hannah and Harrison need to be protected from him.

(ending 1)
It felt to me like they had made one decision about the ending, Dexter would kill himself in the storm. A reasonable (not brilliant ending but it makes some sense)

(ending 2)
Then they thought..."oh hang on Hannah won't know what's happened..." We could show that she does know and leave it ambiguious as to what happens next. So they did the whole Hannah reading the knews that he is presumed dead but no body found thing. This really seemed like it might be one of those "oh no he's dead, how sad" endings that happens so often, and we see the loved one very sad but then the camera pulls back to reveal the person presumed dead has actually survived and made their way to the loved one and all is well. They didn't cop out completely though and just left it up to the viewer to think..."maybe Dexter isn't dead and will find Hannah (after all we know he is an expert tracker (mainly of prey granted)) but be free from his past life as everyone thinks he's dead"

Again not a brilliant ending but left it nicely open to discussion and interpretation by the viewer as to what they felt the future would hold for Dexter, Hannah and Harrison.

(ending3)
Then they decided to put the lumberjack part part on the end to show Dexter is alive (yay!)...but it makes no real sense and destroys any ambiguity or room for thought of ending 2 and instead just leaves the viewer feeling a bit confused and disappointed.

My only thought is that maybe they wanted the viewer to pick up on minor hints that maybe he is fiding his way to Hannah, after all she is in Argentina and there is a lot tree felling and lumber production in South America, so maybe Dexter is working his way to find her...but this is very tenuous and most likely just an inventionof my mind desperate to give it more meaning???

Wasnt THAT bad, I just feel slightly annoyed that his last... rival? I guess.. Saxon wasn't a worthy one at all. It's a shame John Lithgow went under the knife all those seasons ago. He imo was Dexters only worthy opponent.

I've watched Dexter from the very beginning it's sad to see it gone for good :(:(

I still enjoyed it, because it's Dexter. It wasn't the right ending though.

They should have just left it either as he's dead, with the very least presumed dead BUT WE MUST NOT KNOW.

Or, let him have the happy ever after.

It felt like the end of Batman DKR. Is it that certain demographics simply have to know or what?!

/edit: Also, they could have made the whole ending even more chaotic. Why let Dexter get away with so much when juggling so much. Saxon could have been a much tougher adversary - why didn't Saxon steal details on Dexter like Dexter did to him? If Dexter had the police, Deb, Saxon, Hannah and the storm to deal with, over a couple of episodes...

Agree with many comments John Lithgow's character was amazing and could have rounded up the whole show but alas it still made dexter great regardless.

I feel the way its all ended, Harrison discovers his father left behind "The Code" from one father to another, and Harrison and Dexter team up down the road ;)

There is plenty left they can do if they want...

But for now its the end, recession and those special FX tells me comic books down the road.

One other thing that bugged me in s8 was how bad/wooden an actor Harry is. I also thought Charlotte Ramplinl played Vogel far too weak and soft once Dexter knew who she was. She had a weird accent too :p

Had a thought last night... Maybe Dexter left Harrison with Hannah to show her that she didn't have to be this horrible person that has killed a few people and that she can love and be loved by someone unconditionally. A gift as such to show her that he knows that she can be trusted implicitly and have someone to look after and care for as well as receiving that love back (Yeah Yeah the I LOVE YOU HANNAH scene was a bit sick making) Wasn't there also something about her having a miscarriage in the past (And been beaten up for it by her former partner) and she always wanted a child but had been through (And killed off) some real scumbags?

All went downhill with the focus on family stuff, should have been about him nearly getting caught every other season, at least they should have had a repeat of season 2 but this time they all find out, what a waste of a potentially exciting end to the show, writers just didn't try, every time we think it might get good nothing comes of it and its back to boring old family man dexter with his bit of killing on the side, pathetic.

Watched the last two eps last night, and wasn't a fan. I knew someone was going to die, and I could have accepted it being Deb, if they hadn't made it look like a quick recap of things that happened in a previous episode. Even with a whole season to play with it felt like they tried to cram too much into the last hour.

I didn't like the Lumberjack part. The ambiguity would have saved it a little for me. I also get the whole DKR reference as well, me and my mates were doing bad Michael Caine impressions whilst Hannah was reading the article on her "generic tablet device" half expecting Dexter to be watching them from a distance.

Whilst I enjoyed it all, season 4 was definitely the peak. That was a finale and a half.

Awful, just awful. I am still shaking my head at how the writers thought THAT was a satisfactory way to end an 8 year series.

The final season should have been about Miami Metro and perhaps the FBI closing in on him and eventually the truth came out and he was on the run. It could/ should have been some of the most tense and riveting television of recent times, but instead we got THAT. I had to actually force myself to watch it on a week to week basis and given that I was a big fan of the show, should shame the writers and producers.

The characters, the actors and most importantly, the fans deserved better. :(

I wonder if the ending was a bit of a Shawshank Redepmtion ending.

That was supposed to end with Red narrating and being on the bus but the studio didn't like that and made them add the 'happy ending' on later so they had to get together and do an extra shoot.

Could it be the same thing? Or maybe it didn't 'play well' with American test audiences who want everything neatly sewn up.

I thought it had ended with him sailing into the storm, that I thought was quite good and poignant and then there was a massively jarring 30 second random bizarre scene.
