Battlefield 4 + Frostbite + Mantle presentation by Johan A

So the slide that says 15+ frostbite games in development which says Dragon Age Inquisition, also says Starwars, Battlefield, Mass Effect...... maybe I'm behind the times but are they suggesting there is a new Mass Effect game in development?

Ok quick google suggests a mass effect 4..... wasn't it a trilogy? Aside from Bioware going crap the potential they may get back to their best and make a couple games on Frostbite which is seemingly going full AMD fanboy status is interesting.

Anyway, from the slides it again gives the distinct impression that game dev's have for years wanted lower level access, and we've for years heard game dev's say DX has huge limitations compared to consoles. Hard to read between the lines, it's obvious that with AMD as a partner they wouldn't talk badly about it but they seem excited and it's a pretty huge step.

IT also seems to be suggesting one of the things is rather than the driver/api handling so much, they make the driver smaller, simply and the game engine itself handles a lot more.

We're also talking about what we need, a new API writen for this generation of hardware, not DX which being MS is old code built on old cold built on old code that started off for hardware that simply wasn't available now.

Backwards compatibility is great, seriously it really is, but it's also holding hardware back all the time. Windows with the most backwards compatibility is such a bloated pile of poop in comparison to other OS's providing the same level of usability are lighter and far more efficient. Sometimes for the sake of the industry we just need them all to get together and start fresh... but that very rarely happens.

I want to ask you about SteamOS, or just Gaming on Linux in general, i use Linux and like the idea of gaming on it, from what i understand Valve intend to make that a reality.

I would like to know if your working with Steam / Valve to make sure your hardware runs well early on with this platform.

And, is there any way Mantle could be beneficial in that?

As i understand it Nvidia are already working with Valve to that end.

Nice presentation, It'll be interesting to see how much of a performance advantage there is with Mantle. If its significant then I may well sell my 780 and go with team RED for a generation or so.
