Steam reveal

The pads are clickable buttons also.

Looks like its aimed at shooters where you only click to fire, something like Fifa would be better on the 360 controller

You never just fire. Theres jumping, hiding, selecting weapon, secondry fire, run etc.
And far from convinced about trackpads, if nothing else they make your fingers hurt after a while due to abration, which you dont get with sticks.

Dont know what else to expect, you cant reinvent the wheel

Until we can telepathically speak to electronics i dont see how much Valve, Sony or MS can come up with anything much different to what have already seen
If they want a steam box in the living room it needs a living room friendly controller

They obviously want to add a screen to give extra live info but thats about it

Open up your steam, there is a full description and example of Portal bindings, 4 shoulder buttons and 2 on the back plus the 2 on the track pad isnt bad

the problem that is see is in fps's where is the ls and rs buttons as without those how will you be able to run and things like that.

same way you run with sticks i guess

I was also wondering this. Would roller balls have worked instead of trackpads?

From the pictures it looks like there are 2 bumper buttons on each side which your index fingers rest on, so that's 2 trackpads (one for look direction, one for move direction), two buttons in the trackpads (shoot and crouch?), four bumpers for zoom, sprint, jump and reload, and what looks like two trackpads underneath the controler for your fingers (scroll wheel for weapons?).

It's just not going to work for some things (stuff like the X-series which are notorious for huge amounts of controls) but it's an interesting change to the more conventional style.

It's not that bad guys, jeez...

My only thought is that whilst I can imagine a high-quality version of a trackpad on a circle being pretty good for aiming or whatever the mouse's responsibility would normally be... but I'm not sure it makes as much sense for movement; could they not have put the trackpad on one side and an analog stick on the other? (and screw symmetry) I just feel like resting your thumb at the top of a trackpad won't feel right compared to pushing forwards on a stick (although perhaps the haptic feedback will push back in such a way that makes it feel like you are pushing forward with constant force instead)

Otherwise I think it's not too bad... the ABXY buttons are in a slightly weird place but that really depends on how big the pad is overall

It's really difficult to get a feel of these sort of things without actually having a go. I don't think we can dismiss it as awful until we've seen some hands-on gameplay.

I'm sure the trackpads work well. They wouldn't put out a device which doesn't do what it's supposed to! Especially with their haptic system. It sounds really advanced, from what they're saying.

Looking forward to the specs of the boxes next week and to having a go on the old "owl-face"!

While it looks odd.....i can see myself using it.

I have always wanted a gamepad that gives the precision that a mouse offers, and high precision trackpads could well be the answer after reading more about them.

Also button wise, while it may seem odd positioning in the middle, we cant forget about the 2 buttons on the back of the pad (could be game changers) and the 2(looks like 2) shoulder/trigger buttons.

It has potential and im looking forward to hear some hands on opinions and see some footage.

Have you tried using trackpads on laptops for any length of time? Painful fingers is an understatment.

And it still doesnt have enough buttons, look at xbox. 4 shoulder buttons, 4 normal buttons, two sticks, one 4directional pad, and that still requires doubling up of function in games. And the two centra buttons.

How do you know that these track pads are the same as the ones you've used on 'laptops'?

I don't get tired fingers ;) when using my MacBook Pro, maybe I'm just used to using them more?

As for the Pad looking different? How so? Instead of two joy sticks it has two track pads?

You mainly use a right and left click on the mouse, so they're facilitated with the triggers no? Track pads to move and look around?

Tiered fingers? Nothing to do with tiered fingers. Its to do with it being abrasive. Never had a trackpad that isnt, so hold no hope this is any different.

You use a hell of a lot nore than two buttons, playing pretty much any game.

Can't say I've had that problem, maybe it's due to the quality of track pads you've used previously.

I'm not really one way or the other on the controller nor the announcements in general but without using them I'm not forming a strong opinion, unlike others.
