Steam reveal

There was similar sentiment when motorised vehicles began to appear :p

True, but the wheels are still round :D

Its going to need some good console gamers to get hold of it for a while before we get any idea if it works or not. I find touch control on tablet games to be pretty poor and taking it in a different direction to ps/xbox controllers is brave.

Between this/amd's GPU's its been a fun week for mindless speculation :D

They arent releasing it, theyre doing a beta round to testers first. These things sound far from ready.

It's a good job you're not a beta tester then, so much for having an open mind eh!

Between that and your stumpy fingers made of cheese :p.

Yeah becuase im so afraid to say im wrong, if it turns out great, where most of you guys will plod on in dream land, even if its terriable.

While it looks odd.....i can see myself using it.
I think it might be better than our first reaction's imply. It looks weird, but the more I think about how useless mini-sticks are for anything accurate (hence auto-aim/steer) the more I'm interested to find out how these behave.

I know in my own life that a touch interface has become more and more important and natural. I've even bought a trackpad for my main PC even though I've no intention of running Win8. Touch is just starting to seem very natural, and I can imagine those concave touch zones being very accurate.

This could be a game changer... or yet another in a long line of failed attempts to innovate in controller design.

Not at all, If I like it, awesome, If I don't, I don't.

I've not made my mind up either way because I haven't used the device, which is not what you've done.

You've made a hilarious comment about track pads & written this controller off, without using it. Keep up the good work.

Well i havent made up my mind have I?
I see lots of deisgn issues, but have also siad thats all we can go on untill we get it in are hands.

So its no more of making mupt mikn d up, than you going its going to be fine.

Reachable /= same time.
Yes my mind is made up, just like yours, just opposite ends. The ulti mate test will be when we get are hands on it. But at the moment we dont have the luxury. You think its fine, I think it has majour design flaws. Wonder if their OS will be compatable with xbox controllers.

Hmm.

I don't understand how people refer to the OS as a way to 'expand valves wallet' but then cry that HL3 wasn't announced.... surely something that would have been valves ultra cash cow?

Or would it have been a case of 'I'm not buying HL3 .. it'll make valve some cash... er...err...screw them!'

jeez

I use my MacBook a hell of a lot everyday and I've not once found my fingers are getting sore, far from it.

In fact, the whole notion of it sounds ridiculous.

That being said, the MacBook trackpads are completely smooth. Any ridges on the surface and it would be a different matter.

Of course it expands their wallat, it limits people into the steam ecosystem(which isnt a bad thing, most ecosystems do these days). Thus making them money. I just dont see why you would dual boot with windows, unless you only need a gaming OS then its free. But most people need windows for other software.
The steam box is more interesting, but i cant see it being a big market, big pc gamers will want a full PC rig, lounge gamers will be hard pressed to be pulled away from xbox/ps, which leaves a niche market. They also dont have funds to just throw money at it for years untill they gain enough marketshare.

Looks interesting, not sure what these trackpads are going to be like, but playing an FPS using a traditional trackpad is incredibly difficult and frustrating.

Only experience people have had using track pad would be on a laptop using their index finger in a awkward position. This will be nothing like it and comparisons should not be made between the two.

Dare I say I reckon the interface will be more similar to a traditional gamepad than to a track pad on a laptop. Really looking forward to trying this out, has lot of potential and plenty of time to make refinements based upon feedback from gamers.

I wonder what happens when your finger gets to the edge of the pad. Are you supposed to take it off and position it in the centre to carry on moving/looking? Or is it like those virtual joysticks on an iPad where you move slightly and the movement carries on.
