Can this be right? (scary temperatures) Is thermal compound that huge a deal?

Mildly freaking out at my new build's temperatures at what basically is idling.

Relevant specs:
Bitfenix Prodigy
i7 4770
Corsair H80i
2x 120mm Bitfenix standard fans

This has to be a faulty sensor, right? The air being kicked out is all very cool, and I've ramped all the fans up to max. Running a test in a second and going to try that Corsair mini-usb thing on the h80's pump but I wanted to do a quick check on here.

I'm not fully clued up, but given idling on stock cooler for most is around 45c, surely this is a dodgy reading rather than some hideous mistake I've made in the build? It's on stock thermal paste but surely that wouldn't make a +50c difference??

Thats too hot matey, reseat, check the pump and fans.

If you are at stock should be getting about 50-60C under load.

Might sound silly but have you verified the readings? Try using CoreTemp or HWMonitor, better yet check what the bios says.

On the plus side you could boil water for tea inside your computer. Seems only yesterday I was able to make a full cup of tea in the time the computer took to boot up... those were better days in may ways.

But yes - don't run your computer with those temps as I can't imagine it's good for the mean operating hours. I'd recommend you try another cooler if you have one available - maybe something so simple as an air cooler with a good fan running the chip at stock? This will tell you if you have a faulty temp sensor.

Also - DO NOT RUN A CHIP WITHOUT THERMAL PASTE! Any thermal paste will do - there was some chap who did a bit of research and found that a particular brand of toothpaste, in the short term, outperforms pretty much anything - I think his name was Dan. However - without any thermal paste you will see very high (too high) operating temperatures.

P.S. - I'm not recommending anyone use toothpaste as thermal paste - you will probably break/kill something.

Sorted now. Good god did I muck this one up!

It's all fine. Basically had a very small kink in the loop in setup but in pushing that in that formed a much more serious kink when I put the side panels back on. Didn't realise that knocked the very loose sata connection off so the pump wasn't running full stop.

Been running prime 95 realtemp test for 8 minutes now, hovering between 35-55c depending on stress level so pretty much sorted now, was just being an idiot.

I should clarify: I'm not using /aftermarket/ thermal paste; I am using the stock thermal paste the Corsair coolers come with which afaik is pretty decent stuff.

so nice when you find you've actually just been an arse, and it's not so serious, isn't it!! thanks for sharing, makes everyone of us who have also missed the glaringly obvious and dropped a brown one, feel sooooo much better :P Good luck, but with those temps, luck doesn't seem to be needed.

Did you remove the plastic cover label from the cooler?
That made me smile. :) Not as preposterous a suggestion as it first sounds with those temps. Glad you can stop tearing your hair out and it was just a pump 'issue'!
