This makes me think Mantle must be legit, if it can cause a stir in the industry. AMD might just be onto something.
Nvidia, Valve, AMD, pushing hard to make gaming less dependent on Windows. PC gaming landscape could be vastly different in a year or two from now..

Out of curiosity could a Windows XP user play BF4 with Mantle?
If a Steambox is using GCN, then yes MS and Sony would be worried that a cheap new platform may emerge that can leverage a mid-range GPU or even APU for better graphics than consoles.

Don't see why not, since it doesn't seem to be OS dependent.
That was some great reading, suprised about ARM being so poor back in the day they weren't the most responsive but generally had a solid offering out the box and would quietly fix up bugs fairly timely.

Isn't Carmack a Nvidia fanboy, and the day after AMD speak out about Mantle with a huge developer(also making relevant games people actually like 
) Nvidia has their biggest developer come out and say negative things., colour me shocked to my very core.
Why would Sony or MS care, because midrange gpu's might outstrip consoles..... they WILL do so in a couple years, which has happened every gen. Mantle is likely to improve performance but not to the tune of bringing a generation of performance forward. With AMD consistently working on a lower level API they are more likely to find ways to improve performance via updates to the API which could well translate to the consoles.
MS won't love DX being somewhat challenged, though AMD can't live without DX right now(and for quite some time) it's an alternative that is more work for AMD, not a replacement for DX.
Consoles will always trail behind PC's shortly after release, Mantle or no Mantle that is true.
GTA 5 is likely to hit the new gen consoles, look WAY better than current gen, and still be spanked hard by PC's running it at much higher resolutions. In a few years the midrange on ANY API will be able to beat consoles in resolution, settings, etc.

Not going to comment on whether he is an nVidia fanboy or not but his stance in that regard is born out of developer experience rather than the typical emotional led consumer fanboy perspective. He definitely has a strong nVidia bias but hes also been quite critical of nVidia.
(I've seen some of his rem'd comments regarding rage pro back in the day in the source code for various products definitely not an ATI fan though not really sure of his stance on AMD).
good, there is nothing they can do about, if they whinge over it then its pretty clear AMD are very serious about this, good for us.
There was a big tiff a few months ago about something positive he said wrt AMD, that later turned out to be misconstrued and that he still preferred NV.

Makes me wonder just how much of performance advantage this Mantle API will have. Maybe Microsoft are worried because they've been intentionally holding back PC hardware performance with DirectX all these years, so that Xbox 360 would have a longer lifespan, i.e. not look like dog**** next to PC graphics.
I have to say I've not really been that impressed by any console on the graphics front in the last 10 years, yeah for coming home from pub with mates whack something on sure the ps3 and 360 have been fine, but you stick them against a decent pc, one that's had a grand + spent on it, and it's chalk and cheese time, everytime, even the non-pc geeks concur.. whether drunk or not!

It's fine if you don't know the difference, but I took my PC round a friend's house and showed him what BF3 was supposed to look like and he couldn't get over it.
I've been playing a bit of GTA5 there and I can't stop thinking about how much better it'd look. Everything keeps rippling in the background... Still, considering how old/limited the hardware is, it's not that bad really.

Wait what...a 7 year old console that originally cost £300-400 doesn't match a £1000+ current tech pc...I'm shocked.

That's my point. It should be radically different on the PC given the disparity in hardware tech, not just the same game, but higher resolution/textures and a few extra features tacked on.
I don't blame it entirely on the Windows and DirectX, as there's always going to be compromises made on performance when you have so many different configurations of hardware to deal with, plus there's no incentive for developers to bring out AAA PC exclusives anymore, and even if they did, they would still be dumbed down to cater for the lowest common denominator.
If a game was developed specifically, for a top end gaming rig (Ivybridge-E, Titan SLi, 32g ram, 4K monitor, etc), without the limitations of Windows/DirectX and with absolutely no compromised made, I think it's safe to say we would all have our jaws hitting the floor pretty quickly.
