Bit of a background. I'm 28, passed my test on 13th May this year, been driving my 1.1 206 since 31st May until now. Going to be coming into some money end of November and so been looking a nice car to replace the heap of a 206 (hey, it got me on the road for a budget!). Currently insurance on that is just over £1,600 on TPFT with my mum on there as named driver.

I'm currently in the midst of moving as well so have started to do some quotes on my new place, what followed was a bit of a shock, in a good way! Google maps shows its exactly 1 mile between old and new place. I will use admiral as the benchmark on these

So surprised that just a mile down the road means I will save over £400 on car insurance, I have since got a quote on a Mazda 3 2.0 Sport for £1003 from admiral as well which has really caught my eye

Always the same, the effect is just exaggerated as you're paying a high cost already.

PS I'd much rather a Mazda 3 2 litre ( saloon preferably) than a mk5 1.6

Yeah, I understood that many more people were likely to be crashing 1.1 206's compared to a newer car so wasn't surprised at being able to go fully comp for same sort of money I'm paying now, just the difference in going a mile down the road that shocked me when nothing else changes.

I am also veering towards the Mazda 3 Sport as well, so few Mazda 3's available around here though.

Will be posting a thread nearer the time asking for some more suggestions on what to move to next, just doing some research before then and getting a rough idea whats in budget and possible insurance costs :)

I would take the Golf, the Mazda is terrible inside.

I wouldnt say terrible I had one as a company lease for three years back in 2007 it wasnt terrible, obviously not up to German standards but the golf is boring compared to the Mazda

I would, my sister has one and frankly it's a horrible thing inside. I'd certainly have a Golf over it even if it meant dropping an engine size.

The interior definitely is far less attractive but the 1.6 golf is significantly underpowered ( I'd probably even rather have the 1.9 pd) whereas the 2 litre in the Mazda is quite a decent drive, no competition for me but it depends what you're after I guess!

If the 1.4tsi was an option in 120 form that's what I'd pick without hesitation but I'm guessing its well out of budget

Also, redo that quote with admiral directly. Comparison sites really are a poor way to buy insurance.

Cheers, will do in future. Was really just for a quick check as quite easy to just amend an existing quote and see what comes up

Didn't want to start a debate between the two cars :D

Just wanted to show what a difference a mile down the road makes to insurance quotes.

My Swiftcover quote was also about 25% cheaper via a comparison site (I can't remember which one) than when I went direct.

When I was getting quotes the Mazda 6 was a bit cheaper to insure than the 3.
Depends if you want a larger car tho, I've been watching the recent Mazda6 sales recently just waiting for the right one to pop up.

I never bother with comparison sites. I find 5 insurance companies and punch in my details for all of them and just go with the cheapest one.

Difference can be well over £100.

I pay £240 pa with admiral for the Mazda 3 2.0L Sport, but do have quite a few years NCB.

Not always though. Buying my insurance with Sainsbury's was cheaper through Confused than it was directly. Adding my nectar card number to the policy once through to Sainsbury's site dropped it further. Plus the double nectar points for 2 years is going to net me £400 or so.

Also, where possible, get quotes 2 weeks+ in advance of the policy start date, I was able to save £30/month on my new car simply by getting it insured from next weds rather than last weekend!
