AMD Radeon R9 290X Battlefield 4 Edition – Only 8,000 and No Specs For Pre-Order

5,000.00 CNY = 506.111 GBP

AFAIK this pre-order bundle doesn't include any extra free SP clusters or VRAM chips so it's no skin off my nose.

I think AMD are making a total mess of the R9 290X launch. If it is a good, sound, high performing product there is absolutly nothing to lose by giving us the specs, prices and performance figures now.

On the otherhand if the card is not upto expectations..............

Its probably more a case of them trying to not let Nvidia get too much of an indication of performance,as they could then have time to rain on AMD's parade. You need to consider that no R9 series cards can be bought now,so I expect you will get specifications closer to when cards actually hit retail, which probably is around the BF4 launch date.

I'm assuming they need a smidge more time to get things up to snuff for reviewers before they can even send out cards in preparation. What I don't get is the lack of pricing and specs.

Pricing and specs gives a chance for Nvidia to respond, since there are no cards available from AMD now for people to buy.

ATM,Nvidia does not know whether the R9 290X is faster than a GTX780,slower or around the same speed. They don't even know the price! It also means they cannot rain on AMD's parade by reducing prices, etc, before AMD actually have cards that they can sell. Remember,Gibbo said he does not know himself the final pricing of the R9 290X and that it could be anywhere between £399 to £599,and AMD have not told him.

Also, the R9 290X cards which will be on pre-order next week are the more expensive BF4 edition cards, which again are not probably indicative of normal R9 290X pricing.

Its all about keeping Nvidia in the dark.

If that is what AMD are doing, then why on earth didn't they just hold the event and say ok here are the specs and the cards are available now at this price. That way Nvidia cannot respond before they are available and it would make the consumer (that's us by the way) much happier. Rather than this seemingly botched way that they are doing this launch.

Price points and specs would still enable Nvidia to respond though. The specs would give Nvidia a guestimate of performance of the R9 290X,together with the price, would mean they will know whether to cut prices,or bundle more stuff with their current cards, before AMD has cards available in retail.

I would expect this time,AMD would make sure reviews are close to actual retail availability of the R9 290X. This is unlike with the HD7970.

Moreover, another factor is AMD wants to shift its current HD7000 series cards in stores,as the R7 and R9 series are being launched at virtually the same time.

If there is no word from AMD on pricing and specs by Oct 5th I am just going to get a 2nd 7950 after all. Or a 780 if I can find one cheap.

I doubt there will be any retail availability by then, and a pair of HD7950 cards would be faster TBH.

I don't expect to be able to buy one by then, just get the facts at last. I was hoping to get a 9950 (290 salvage part) and another one when blocks became available.

You've waited this long, im sure waiting a few more days wont hurt?

Oct 5th is a few more days. ;)

Earlier this week we told you that AMD would be releasing a limited edition Radeon R9 290X Battlefield 4 video card. AMD Corporate Vice President of the Graphics Business Unit, Matt Skynner, said that limited quantities of the Radeon R9 290X Battlefield 4 Edition card will be available for pre-order only, starting October 3 with select partners.

What we have learned since bringing you that news is that AMD will be releasing a grand total of 8,000 AMD Radeon R9 290X Battlefield 4 Edition cards. This means globally and not just regionally! We also learned that the cards specifications and the final price of the card will not be disclosed when the pre-order begins. This means that you’ll have to put down a deposit without knowing the price or clock speeds of the card that you will be purchasing. This is a very interesting and something we’ve never seen done before in recent times. To top that off only certain Add-In board partners will be offering it.
