i received a rather tidy tax refund the other day and for various personal reasons that i'd rather not go into, i don't particularly want my employer to find out about it. It's a small business who use an accountant.

so my question is: will he find out through the accountant that i got this refund? many thanks

As far as I am aware the only reason he would find out if the tax man wrote him and asked him to give you it. Otherwise it is none of his business.

No, I can't think why/how they would. As far as I know they only get notified of your tax code for PAYE purposes, everything else is between you and the taxman.

The tax code wouldn't reflect a tax rebate as far as I am aware, so I don't think they would know. Rebates usually come in the form of a nice cheque attached to the rebate form don't they?

It has nothing to do with your employer anyway.

Your employer deducts a set amount each payday based on your tax code that the tax office give them. The money is sent to the taxman and at the end of the year or if requested the tax office work out what you have paid and what you should have paid and then refund you in the form of a tax rebate.

thanks guys. Whilst i know it's nothing to do with my employer insofar as it's obviously my money, for personal reasons, i would prefer my boss not to know what i got it at all. Judging from the responses thus far, it seems that i'll be ok :)

The only thing they might get is a Tax coding change to adjust your deductions for the future, other than that they are unlikely to know.
