It was written by Joss Whedon, you can hardly say he's a weak writer... as for the cast, I'll give them more than one episode to judge, some of them were good, some weren't.

It's one episode. Whedon's shows rarely start out that great (first episodes of Buffy, Angel and Dollhouse were nothing special, first televised episode of Firefly is the worst as well) It did what it needed to do which was introduce the characters and setting, it's where they go from here that matters.
First episode of Firefly was miles better than the episode of SHIELD. In fact Firefly had obvious potential from the pilot anyway and each character had presence. Not so in this. They are both different genres of TV shows as well so can't really be compared.
I didn't get the same kind of feeling with this as I did with Firefly (example), This feels more like how Other shows of recent times panned out like Revolution, The 4400, Arrow etc. They all ended up being a bit average. Decent visuals but poor acting. This is no different.

Arrow has become pretty good actually. Maybe you just don't really like super hero stuff?
I definitely am a DC and Marvel fan but TV based superhero series rarely cut it compared to their respective movies. I have high expectations when it comes to stuff like this and going by reactions of these shows, many others do too.
Plenty of series with truly amazing acting and presentation. There's no reason why SHIELD or others like it should be below par compared to those.

It's simple really, other shows cost a lot less to make in terms of sets, effect etc. Judging any TV show after one episode is a bit silly, you'd miss out on a lot of great shows if you give up if the first episode is no good (Spartacus for example, and the first episode of Game of Thrones was pretty poor) I say you have to give a show at least 6 episodes to see how it's going to go. This was nowhere near as poor as people are making out (if you want an example of a poor show then check out Atlantis the new BBC one!)

I must admit, it felt a bit awkward, but I'll happily watch more in the hope that it improves. It's something new to watch, I won't shed any tears over it if it doesn't improve.
Arrow was terrible for the first few episodes but once it hit a certain episode (iirc the one which was mostly based on the island story) and we knew a bit more of the story line etc. it turned out to be absolutely amazing, each episode just got better and better, one of my favourite shows now, although I don't watch much these days 
So hopefully the same will happen with this.....

Agree whole heartedly with this, nearly gave up on Arrow after about 4-5 episodes but so glad I stayed with it. SHIELD has potential so will have to see how it pans out.
Did the same with Heroes, Thought it was crap after about 25-30minutes into the first episode! so I didn't watch the rest...
Then 6 months ago I borrowed them from a friend, and thought it was actually quite good!!.. some duffers in there, but quite entertaining!.
Gonna give this the benefit of the doubt, and watch at least 4 more episodes before making my mind up!!

The whole thing lacks a bit of grit for me, it seems targeted at a much younger audience than I was expecting. At times it reminded me of a mixture og warehouse 13 and The A Team. I'll give it another week but I think it will be getting filed under B1n.
