I put together my build around 4 weeks ago:

MSI MPOWER Z87 Motherboard, Haswell i7 4770K processor, 16 GB TeamGroup Vulcan Gold RAM, 1 TB Black Caviar Western Digital HDD, 120 GB Samsung EVO SSD, Windows 8 64 BIT,Seasonic X series Gold standard Fully Modular 750 W PSU, Cooler Master CM 690 iii case

Anyway, last week I bought the graphics card - MSI Lightning BE 7970
I fitted it and used the PC as normal for around 5 days with no issues.

Last night I installed ARMA 3, played it for around 1 hour and all of a sudden in game it exists with no warning and gives me a windows error message.

This concerned me, so I rebooted the machine and then attempted to re-try ARMA, this time in a single player mode. After around 10 minutes the machine just cuts out completely, then starts rebooting and then cuts again, it does this around 3 times until I shut the power off all together.

Now, I disconnect the power and open the case, I check all the cables making sure they are fully seated, im not 100% sure the the CPU may not have been fully seated although even if this wasnt, this woulnd explain the issue as it wouldnt have fired up in the first place. I turned the machine back on and it was okay, I installed the latest driver for the GPU and downloaded and installed all windows updates that I had ignored for the last few days.

I ran a stress test on the GPU with no issues, and the machine seems stable although I havnt yet re-tried ARMA as I needed to hit the hay.

I have two theories here, 1 my power supply is dodgy, and two my CPU and or GPU overheated although I did check the temps about 15 minutes before it cut out and they were around the 40 degree mark. (I am using the standard intel heat sink - which should be ok as I am not OC'ing the system)

At this point im concerned, I have just spend well over £1000 on this rig and the first game I try and play and it stops working. Does anyone have a suggestion, I can provide the event logs from the major malfunctions last night if this will help?

What AMD CCC/Driver are you running? Initially it sounds like the driver went crazy and crashed, which would bring you to your desktop with an error message.

The PSU you have is more than capable of powering all that. On your GPU, do you have one power cable coming from the PSU or two independent ones?

It sounds either a heat/power/driver issue.

I will have to answer this when I get home, I will also add event logs from when it happened. Is my intel heat sink enough for this hardware?

The last event that was logged before the game crashed to a windows error was:The local adapter does not support an important Low Energy controller state. The minimum required supported state mask is 0x1f7fffff, got 0x1f3fffff. Low Energy functionality will be disabled.

The GPU has two PCI-E 8 pin connectors going into it and 1 cable going into the PSU.

Finally the driver for the GPU is 9.14.10.0984 Catalyst 13.9

I would try 2 separate cables coming from the PSU.
Perhaps just as a test disable all power saving options both in the BIOS and windows too.

i would say no as games do rack up some heat, and for the sake of £20-30 to keep it cooler is nothing get a hyper evo 212

and you have 2x8 pin connectors and 1x connector into the psu ? that dont sound right should be a connectors for each 8 pin lead.

Two 8 pin connecters into 1 cable on the PSU does not sound right. There should be 2 separate cables.

Does it do this with all games or just Arma 3?

Arma is graphics hungry and will proabably put your card under a lot of stress. When I have had shut downs like this, it was over heating. However, it may do the same thing if the PSU is faulty or not supplying enough juice. The card will draw more power when under more stress.

Additionally, have you checked your power management settings? What other devices were active at the same time? Having googled your error message it seems like it could be a conflict that other devices are causing when Windows tries to put them in a low power state whilst you are gaming. Most errors seem to revolve around bluetooth. Also, have you checked your motherboard settings, as I have read that Rapid Start BIOS settings can cause problems on Windows 8 Systems.

I have read in several places that some games have issues with that card when overclocking, even though the benchmarks come back ok. Have you been overclocking it? Likewise, it seems some have issues with Afterburner software.

Have you done any scans for malware?

Have you tried doing any stress testing on your memory?

I reckon it is likely lack of power to the GPU, but it might be a compatibility issue with Win8 and power management, or Win8 and your GPU/drivers/overclocking.

The OEM heatsink on his CPU should be perfectly adequate if he is not OC'ing it.

No harm in checking the temps under load though, but I doubt the chip will be overpowering the heatsink - providing it has been fitted properly.

I dunno buffet i have seen it before, And these new haswell seem to put out a lot of heat, and i always think if your spending £150-300 on a cpu a extra £20+ on a decent cooler can be the difference of it living 1 year to 5 years .

but by the sounds of it seems like the gpu is not plugged in properly :D

I keep seeing people say this, but under what basis?

At idle, in this cooler weather mines about 25C - Rising to about 60C under load.

Perhaps a couple more C if under air, I wouldn't call that hot.

You dont think 60 is hot at stock 0.o

I think that it is to hot for stock cpu and a stock heatsink but thats me
