Government says that prisoners should pay for damage to their cells

Well played Chris Grayling!

Come out with an inconsequential proposal, people lap it up (rabble rabble rabble, responsibility, pay for it, blah blah) whilst trying to get 2 & 6 out of a crim for scribbling "x woz ere" on his cell ultimately fails for being a waste of time (guess what, he/she's got not money!)
My thoughts exactly.

I wonder what study he used to reference this policy idea which supported the premise it would reduce costs/damage & increase rehabilitation along with prison order....

What are his intended goals (broad goals, long term)?, what measures will be use to determine success?, what evidence supports his methods? - this should be basic stuff.

If the convicts want to trash their cells then let them trash it and leave it as it is, its a prison ffs not a premier inn.
If I had my way they would only have a camp bed to sleep on and a hole in the ground to do their business in, that's my idea of a prison cell.

I was under the impression that they had to pay for their stay once they came out of prison. turns out, after some googling, that I was wrong.

Personally, I think they should.

This still creates the same problem which OP alluded to, in that if they are really struggling when they get out of prison and have no money it could cause them to re offend.

So who empties the hole? Or do you just let them die of dysentery?

I'm sure you'd change your mind if you accidently kill a cyclist on the way to work one morning.

They should do what they do in america make them sleep in tents and bring in chain gangs make them work instead of cushy rooms prisoners get treated better than pensioners

Oh yes, because that's so successful! America's well known for it's low reoffending rates and small prison population.

Oh...

With you two agreeing like this, I'm not sure who I'm worried about the most.... :p

Im sure i wouldnt, im all for giving convicts a fresh start after they have served their time, but all the while they are serving it, it should be as unpleasant as possible.
If they want to make it even worse for themselves by trashing the place then so be it.
And while im on one, how about the convicts empty their own toilet holes?

So if you found yourself falsely accused of rape and ended up in such a place for 23 hours a day, you would have no problem with that?

Empty them where? When the cell doors open for 1 hour at 7am would you have 300 prisioners scoop out excrement from a hole in the ground and carry it to a communal sewer somewhere in the middle of the wing? Sounds like a brilliant plan. What about the prison officers who would also have to put up with that smell?

They can break their cells. Of course they should then have to tidy it up and live in it and take their own responsibility for it it is not a hotel.

Oh and to monkeynut the re offend rates don't really matter. It is the principle of forcing people to not enjoy prison or live like they are in w hotel that needs to be tackled m

The re offend rates in the us are not comparable to those in the uk due to their poverty levels.

We hwve little to no scientific evidence of how to rehabilitate offenders for any given crime. That they might not get caught again is immaterial.
