Right,

The old dear currently drives a fantastically ugly (she thinks it's beautiful) Nissan Micra C+C 1.6 Sport convertible. Small, nippy, economical and she has fun in it.

Unfortunately she also now also has a very large, slobbery dog, which doesn't really fit in the back very well, so she needs something with proper space in the back.

She does 25-30k miles a year (mainly on A roads and dual carriageway) so needs something economical, but recently moved to the middle of nowhere down tiny moorland lanes which see a reasonable amount of winter snow and so she also thinks she wants something with 4 wheel drive, although I expect some decent winter tyres would probably do the trick.

I thought she might actually be the perfect candidate for one of those stupid crossover vehicles, but she doesn't want anything that large either, so I'm a bit stumped!

Budget is £7k max.

TL;DR -

£7k
Room for a big dog...
...but not too big
Economical - 30k miles/year
Not horribly slow
4 wheel drive?

Yeah Yetis are well over budget. Quite a few CR-Vs around that price but she's adamant she doesn't want something that large.

You can get a respectable lump of (used) quality German metal for £7K :D

Something like a used diesel Audi A6 Allroad seems to fit the bill.

*edit* Ohhh, not too big eh?

Or a VW Tiguan?

What part of £7k is hard to understand?

An A6 allroad for £7k is also a bad idea.

EDIT: What about something like a Golf Plus? Obviously no 4WD, but unless she lives on top of a field ridden mountain with no access roads, I doub't she'll need it.

Thanks for the suggestions... having given it some further thought I'm thinking perhaps something like an Audi A3 TDI Sportback might do the trick - hatchback for the dog, not too big, and the 2 litre diesels should do 40mpg without being too slouchy.

EDIT - or yeah, a golf plus. This sort of style anyway.

My mother owns a Renault Modus, she likes it. Easy to get in / out + lots of space for dog when the back seats are adjusted. Eco wise I am not sure but she say's it's alright.

For your Mum Octavia diesel and for your dog a fair few are driving the Mini Cooper
