Audi A4/A5 vs Mercedes C Class vs BMW 5 Series

0-60mph in less than 9 seconds is what I would call fast.
Huh

A 520d does 0-62 in 7.9 seconds, and the slowest C-Class they make - a C200 CDI with 136 HP - manages 0-62 in 9.1 seconds!!

It's actually quite difficult to find anything much slower than 9 seconds to 60 in the class you are interested in. In fact, you'd have to buy the bottom of the range engine in every case in order to stand a chance of not meeting that criteria!

90 MPH lol

I take it you don't spend much time on our motorways?

I spend the best part of 30K miles per year on our motorways, which is why I come across so many idiots. Granted, not all of them are doing 90mph, but many of those who are lack the hazard perception to read the road far enough ahead of them.

You should spend £20,000 on an F10 530d. 0-62 in 6.3s, 46 MPG, amazing 8 speed automatic, comfort, leather, storage, heated seats, sound, parking sensors, is a BMW, etc.

The end.

Merc C class, Audi A4 & BMW 3 series are the three "premium" brand small 4 door saloons, but then you have similar sized cars from the likes of VW, Seat, Alfa Romeo, Ford, Vauxhall, Mazda, Toyota, Nissan, Lexus etc. Before we can give you much help we need to better understand what you want and expect from your car and, besides insurance, what your other criteria are.

lol

Buy and A4 with 20" wheels, 25 series tyres and some al ooooys they are all the rage amongst the jet set. A debadged one is even more sought after and they are very very fast.

Lexus are frequently positioned differently than Audi, Merc etc. by the industry, because they do not consistently track as premium in every class.FYI this car is the opposite of fast - it's lethargic with an horrific gearbox!

Ah right. Which of the Lexus classes aren't tracked as premium?

I do like the look of the Audis but was just keeping my options open. I had seen this which is a little over the budget, but I am willing to stretch if it is absolutely necessary:
Audi A4

I wonder why a 1 year old car has had two owners in 8K miles.
With the manufacturers discount, you can get that same car brand new for virtually the same price if you take their finance.
The finance can be dumped at any time you wish after purchase, discount intact.

For an A4 S-line on 19" alloys, I'd guess that the owners couldn't afford the dentist bills ;)

Ah, my bad for not clicking the link - I'd just looked at the link from the previous page that was a S-Line with 19s

At the moment I am just taking mjt's advice and going to test drive them all. I don't have a clue what each one feels like or performs like, and I only have the feedback from everyone's opinions on here to go by.

Test drive them first, I am about (when damn thing arrives) to get an A4, which I liked, but it might not be the driver's car, than many on here appreciate. I can well understand why, but the ride felt lovely and comfortable to me. As for s-line versus technik, depends what sat nav and various systems you want, how you wish to spec things, and what you prefer. Go drive one first.

If I were spending 20 grand on a nearly new car I'd be hoping for something a little more smile-inducing than 'not that bad'.

Have you driven any of these cars? It sounds like you're looking at lots of pictures and specs but haven't actually driven anything yet.
