Hi all, just been told there is a possibility i'll be needing to go to Thailand over next Xmas and New Year for a wedding.

Just having a look at prices for going this Christmas and they seem a bit steep (over £1000), I seem to remember seeing prices of around £600ish return but not entirely sure if that was in a sale or not. Are they likely to be a similar price next Christmas? Do flight prices go up a lot over Xmas/New Year over there? Is it worth booking in advanced?

The last time I went to Thailand was a few years ago but that was in April and on a round the world ticket.

Xmas is universally expensive, don't expect to get out there for less than £1k. It's ultra peak season, so just cough up and go with the best you can afford.

Check on flight centre as there are some deals, but from when I last looked, these all ended around the 10th.

I fly to Asia a fair amount and have been there the last few Christmas and New Year periods. Highly recommend EVA as the prices are the best for a direct flight (from LHR), the planes are nice inside, service is good and the flight times are good.

Parp, thats what I was worried about.

Might have to rethink it then, at least a grand on flights is a bit of a wedge really, don't think me and the Mrs will be able to reasonably afford that and then a decent hotel/resort whilst we're there.

Well we will but when saving for a house and wanting our own holiday together it may be a bit out of reach!

Is it possible to go before the Xmas peak or maybe even after?

You'll still have the weather and be in the dry season, but flights will be a lot less. Going in the 2nd week of Jan for say 2 weeks is under £600pp on EVA.

Its for a wedding which I believe is being held in between Xmas and New Year! Would have been good to go then to take advantage of our business closure/bank holidays too so needn't use as much annual leave!

I need to find out for deffo yet as I don't think the date has been set in stone and I imagine they won't want all of the guests having to shell out ridiculous sums to come to the wedding, so it may well change.

matters where you are staying. got back from thailand about a month ago and there were quite a few us. we had a sweet villa which worked out way cheaper than a hotel.

I'm flying out on the 27th December this year LHR -> BKK and paid about £610 back in June, and went a couple of years ago on the 17th December and paid about £850 that time so it's definitely doable for sub 1k dependant on exact dates.

I went last December and came back in Jan, paid around £800-£850, booked about 1 week before I flew out though. That was LHR > Dubai (overnight) > Phuket and then back from Kuala Lumpur > Dubai > LHR with Emirates.

Worked out perfectly as I got a whole day and night in Dubai so I could check it out for the first time.

Few of my friends paid around £650 direct LHR > BKK and back but they had booked around April time.

Agoda for hotels :)

Wanna go back but gonna give xmas/new year a miss this time and hopefully go next April.

I always think someone wanting to get married on some tropical beach is always a bit selfish TBH. Yes it's their (but really hers) day but asking all your immediate family to spend thousands of their own money to come when, I'm sure, some of them can ill afford it isn't right IMO.
