I dont have the best case for cooling...antec p-183 but i have to make this work as im not getting a new case.I have no problem drilling holes and all that as i have holesaws, drills etc for my job.

I realise its not the ideal case to be butchering side panels with. But meh i need cooling more than looking good and being quiet.

There are already 4 case fans,2 in the front as intakes(no dust filters) ,1 at the top rear and one at the top as exhausts. So i can fit 1 more in the spare 5.25 drive bays at the top,but that wont stop the overheating with the amount of hot air blasting into the case.

With the side panel on the spot where the air is pushed out of the gpu is very hot to the touch from the outside. With the panel off the gpu stays at 90 degrees no matter what i throw at it. With the panel on the pc overheats and crash's when under heavy load for a while.

I was thinking as well as that extra fan in the drive bays, just drilling a pair of holes in the case where the gpu exhausts,so it just blows straight out. then slapping a rad cover over them to make it look less crap.Or will putting a 120mm or 140mm fan blowing onto the gpu be better?trouble is with that is all the heat is still blowing into the case and up past the cpu.I cant bodge a fan on the pci slots as i have a soundcard in the way.

doesnt need to be elegant just has to work! Any ideas bfore the butchery begins? no clever buy a new case comments:) as i will leave the side off rather than do that

Cheers tony

I have two 120mm fans as exhaust on my side panel and my 7990 never goes over 80 :) that's when under a lot if stress as well btw

What components do you have in your case?
A fan in the 5.25 bays is a good move.. as it will blow cool air directly at CPU.
The lower front fan feeding air into lower chamber is not helping much unless you removed the plastic cover plate.
Have you removed the upper HDD cage?
Removing unused PCI slot covers often helps airflow.

The upper cage is still there as it has the optical drive in it,i have seen those drive bay extenders that i could put into the remaining 3 slots. Or just rig up another 120mm fan in there. The cover plate i have just removed, thanks.

I have minimal stuff inside. gpu, soundcard. the hdd and ssd in the bottom cage.

I may well be copying beasty6 with the 2 exhausts and maybe even some cardboard in between the gpu and the cpu. tho thats really scraping the barrel

Go for the exhausts. That seems to be the tried and tested method. Last resort is lower ambient temps (maybe move case if it's in a corner) or open some windows.

Have you tried lowering the gpu's colts? If you can lower it and still be stable then it should lower temps as well

Having an exhaust on the side, just a tiny bit above the GPU level will probably help the most.

But you could also put one fan just "in front" of the HDD's with some creative cable-ties. I know you said you already have one at the front of the case, but having another adjecent to that in the "middle" of the case would bridge the gap, since the air will not reach the GPU all the way from the front.

That way you'd have fresh air coming in from the front to the GPU, and then it going out from the side before it reaches the CPU.

Go for 140mm or bigger.

it's hard to tell without some photos. can you share some?

on an experimental basis, try putting your pc side ways and remove the side panel, so air from side of 7990 can exhaust directly upwards. try to see if this reduces the temperature by any significant amount. i got a feeling that the 7990 is not getting enough fresh air. we need to determine where the bottleneck is first: not enough air being delivered, or not enough exhaust route for hot air.

also, what brand/speed is the fans running at? a lot of common problem with larger fan is that they operate at much lower speed, yes, they generate a lot of flow, but not a lot of pressure head. this means the flow will either go up or down very quickly without being pushed all the way across the case where the middle/last fans are on the 7990.

if the experiment goes well and you see a drop in temperature, then you can try installing a 60mm/80mm on the back where the PCIe back plates are and blow air into the case. unlike 7970 reference design, 7990 exhaust air on the side of the card, therefore you shouldnt have problem sucking cold air from the back of the case and deliver it directly into the 7990 back fan.

what CPU heatsink/fan are you using? the back of 7990 is quite hot as well.

I had the exact same problem with my 7990.

You are not going to like this, but 90 degrees is the norm and the only way to get around this is the water cooling route.

I Bitcoin mined 24/7 wth my 7990 on air and reduced voltages and still got mid 90's even with side off on a switch 810 case. As you said the problem is the sideways exhuast of the 7990 cards.

Now with a water block, max is 60 degrees and I can leave the silent rig running with the side of the case on for weeks at a time 24/7

Maybe the fan profile is set to keep the card at 90 by default.. which is crap design.

Adjust the fan profile to be more aggressive with afterburner.
