I think why do most (nearly all really) horror films always end on a happy ending with the bad guy/monster loosing. Look at Eden Lake, I know it aint a horror movie but the ending really got a reaction out of me and made me think about it for a good few days.
Imagine how better Saw would have been without any sequels and just ending the way it did.
Horror films for me is to be terrified and to walk away from the film and still be affected by it for a while.
The grudge (American version) should have just finished with the first one. Especially with that ending, and also 2 and 3 were terrible.

I was actually angry at the end of Eden Lake, the ending stayed with me for a while as I could believe all of it actually happening.

Unfortunately its all about the almighty $. There are plenty of films that could and should have ended after the first but they milked that cash cow for all she is worth. There are also have been some horror films that I would have loved a sequel to but it never happened. That said there are often exceptions to the rules and some sequels are made to continue the story, some are made to fill in the backstory and some are made because people want them to be made. But at the end of the day it will all come down to money.

Watch the Thai version of Shutter. Such a great horror film with an excellent concept.

The big 'reveal' at the end is so poignant. The thought of it stays with me even now.

If you want another film with an ending [or beginning] that will stay with you forever, also watch Irreversible.

Horror films with 'bad' endings are the best. Just far more realistic. I remember watching a Chinese film called Red to Kill where the film ends with the main character being raped by a bunch of spastics. Perfect.

Does it share the same ending as the US remake? If so, I agree, the ending is fantastic and one of the better twists i've seen in horror.

Watch Sinister.

Which incidentally is the only horror film I've watched which has actually made me feel scared/uneasy! (At least since I was about 10 :p)

The Mist.

Happy endings can be great too though (just check xhasmter to prove it...ahem..)The Shining for example. A happy ending as such but a very welcome ending none the less.
