As its getting nearer to christmas, I was just thinking to myself why do we all celebrate christmas?

In my opinion it should only be celebrated by christians, its the birth of christ so its basically the birthday party of jesus.

Only christians believe in jesus so why should non christians be allowed to celebrate christmas?

If you want christmas, commit to christianity and christmas is your reward.

Christmas is actually a pagan festival which predates Christianity by quite a long time. Christians just took it for their own and changed the name, so if anything, Christians shouldn't be allowed to celebrate Christmas (or at least not on December 25th, as this wasn't actually Jesus'birthday...)

For most (from what I've seen) people here though, that's completely untrue. For those people (myself included) christmas is a time of enjoyment, seeing family, and giving/receiving gifts, with absolutely nothing to do with a religion. Times change, and so do the values and significance of cultural events.

Obviously for the actual christians christmas will have a second meaning, but for the rest of us it's completely detached from religion.

Then again most christian stuff is ripped off from other religions, the resurrection is a rerun of the attis story, etc

Modern Christmas has nothing in common with its religious background. That doesn't stop religious people from celebrating the original meaning of Christmas, but why should it stop everyone else from celebrating a few days holiday, gifts and time with family?

why should I celebrate a pagan festival? If anything, Lent is more to the practises of monotheistic religions, so do Christians celebrate and observe that?

personally, being an atheist, I don't celebrate Christmas but if people want to send me presents at Christmas time then it's not my place to judge their faith, as long as it stops short of active attempts at conversion..... :P

My friend, who is a Christian does not celebrate Christmas, He likes the goodwill to all mankind message but he really hates that schools teach that Christmas has anything to do with Jesus Christ.

He also doesn't like the fact that the Sabbath is on sunday, as he says the bible teaches the Sabbath is on Saturday.

You could actually take it further and say that has been reappropriated as a festival of consumerism. So in that sense we can all celebrate it.

yeah pagen rip off

christmas for most has nothing to do with christianity, i dont even think about jesus

one thing i dont like is all the present buying, more over the expectation. me and my siblings dont get anything for each other, ive not asked anything from my partner, id rather just visit people post xmas-pre new year

I think we should celebrate Xmas. Take the Christ out and it should be religion friendly. Change the "meaning" to celebrate winter/family/friends/being alone, whatever people want. Even if you dont celebrate it, 80% of us are likely off at that time of year and tv/shops will be plastered in it come November, its not like they can get away from it.

I like Russian approach, they dont celebrate christmas but instead new years, thats when they give presents to each-other and dress up as their version of santa clause and thats when Putin gives his speech lmao.

They spend it with family untill 0:00 and then go out and go mad with their mates on the streets, much better than Christmas ere, totally depressing.

Christmas is what ever you want it to be.
Some people just don't like fun.
It doesn't have to be religious, it doesn't have to be commercial.
But its a time when most people are off work, when most people are up for some fun.
So enjoy it and stop being miserable gits.

It has little to do with religion and for most people I would imagine it has nothing to do with religion. A great deal of it dates to the Victorian age.

I don't celebrate Christmas - because I don't believe in it.

'Don't believe' in what exactly?

I'm not doing it this year. Literally can't be bothered with it. Fair do's, it's a good excuse for family to get together, treat others nicely and enjoy one's self. However, I also think this is a poor excuse to treat each other in this way anyway, as it underlines the fact that we can all be crap to each other the rest of the time.
