Google/Motorola "Gem" smartwatch

Maybe I'm just dense.
But I don't see the point in a smart watch at all?

I love my gadgets, but this is one I just can't seem to get any interest or excitement for.

Biggest area i think is sports. Easily being able to see pace, maps etc without getting your phone out.
I do want one, but none have interested me so far.

I have a Kreyos Meteor on preorder via their Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, ticks all the boxes for me feature wise and has decent battery life...for £70 delivered I figured it was worth a punt.

Over time as the tech becomes thinner and bendable displays are the norm, they'll start expanding along the arm until we essentially have a screen similar size to the smartphones we're using now and our phones will become obsolete. I guess the watch is the first logical step in this direction as it's familar and people only really expect to know the basics from a wrist based device right now, so they can get away with it not doing much but still being useful.

How can you claim that when the device isn't even close to being available to the general public yet? It's still practically in beta.

it was never actually meant to be a big "thing" they're just testing the water really..

They are expected to be released for general availability early next year, the Explorer Edition is essentially a paid beta and to get people developing quality apps before they are made widely available.

I think Google fully expects them to be a big thing once the mass market can buy them.

I can see the potential but I like my watches mechanical and that is the way it will be for the foreseeable future.

Glass is already pretty much banned everywhere so I very much doubt they'll appeal to many, and those who do buy them, I suspect the novelty will wear thin pretty quick.

Define everywhere? I stay pretty up to date with Glass progress and I've yet to see anything which says its banned everywhere. The odd restaurant, cinema, a few other places perhaps.

The odd cinema ... you'll be in for a surprise when you try to wear your headset down the local Odeon.

And the Department for Transport has already banned drivers from wearing them.

Which is why most people don't see the point at the minute, why half arse about on a tiny screen with sod all features when you've got a proper device in your pocket.

Perhaps I should have said the cinema. Of course they wouldn't be allowed there.

Regarding driving with Glass then surely you shouldn't be allowed to use a smart watch either while driving. If you are going to get distracted by a phone or something like glass then whats stopping you from reading your messages on your watch.

I suspect watches will also be covered by the same law bans the use of phones and Google Glass whilst driving.

exactly this

why would anyone would spend £100 or thereabouts on a watch which does naff all special when you can get HRM and GPS sport watches already for around that?

if they made a model with a HRM and used the phones own GPS, then it would be worth buying for fitness, etc.

even if they make the screen bigger, i still don't see the point, or add features you simply do not need or want.

HRM is essential for the fitness people, which all of these gimmick watches do not have.

also i cannot see another market for such devices, fitness/sports is the only real one tbh.

but iirc for a HRM you need to have a chest strap or else it ain't accurate, which means it will never happen.

someone needs to invent a HRM which works without a chest strap first then these things would actually be useful.

I think sport watches and these watches will merge.
But I agree its purely sport related, unless your a massive geek.

Would love one with a reasonable sized screen for map reading. Rather than getting a massive folded up Os map or phone out the rucksack, blows about in high wind and just generally a pain when up a mountain.
But would like some sort of foam, or soft sweat absorbent easily washed strap, flexible landscape screen around the size of a small phone so 3.5" screen, would need to be thin as well. Also nice to glance at pace, music or even texts etc, without digging the phone out the pocket.

Will these watch-phones have vibrate like normal phones have? Genuine question because I'm hard of hearing and would love to use this as my wakeup call, rather than having to use a much larger vibrating alarm clock inside my pillow. I can't use audible alarms.
