These 2 processors are priced pretty much the same

AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 9370 Black Edition 4.40GHz (4.70GHz Turbo) (Socket AM3+) Processor - OEM

OR

Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - OEM

well LGA1155 is a dead socket so if was to buy the intel then want to upgrade you would need a new mobo too, maybe worth bearing that in mind.
I personally would pick the intel but that's based on the fact these forums have brainwashed me ;)

Firstly do you have a motherboard yet?

Do you do anything that maybe takes advantage of the eight cores of the FX CPU (although its probably still slower)?

Usually a i5 4670K is a similar price as a i5 3570K if you don't have a board yet.

the mobo is designed for intel chips,
the differences between intel and amd chips is like night and day.
sockets, architecture the list is endless

By the way, some (long) time ago there was no difference which processor you put into mobo: AMD, or Intel. Both worked the same way in the same motherboards, but AMD was a bit cheaper ;-)

This changed further, but maybe in the future there will be chipset & mobo design to unify motherboards to use both CPU brands again in the same mobo.

And your point is.....?

In echo of the other posters, if you are keeping the Z77 mobo, go for the 3570K and overclock.

If you are replacing the mobo (which you would have to for the AMD chip) go to Haswell instead.

What he meant was if OP was replacing motherboard, there's still no reason to go socket AM3+ over socket 1150 (considering even a non-K i5 with turbo boost would mostly matches the performance of the overclocked FX8, if not beating it).

Still not listening huh? The only bottleneck I get with my 8320 is the one BF3 puts on it. Seems it has a 200 FPS cap.

BF3 this morning. I can assure you that on my 1155 Sandy it was crap due to the locked multi and lame clock speeds.

As I will maintain until I turn my toes up to the daisies, there are NO Intel CPUs below the 4770k worth buying. Quite simply because the AMDs will do everything the Intels up to the 4670k can but at a massively cut price.

The extra money can be fed into the GPU/S where it will matter the most.

He's got the chance of an unlocked 3570K and doesn't need a new board, it's a done deal.

Hell, he can get a second hand i7 3770K cheaper than it'll cost to to jump to an FX8320 and AM3+ board.

So the AMD stuff is irrelevant.

Plus, if you care about future proofing, AM3+ isn't it right yet, we need more info about the 83XX replacements (Which could be very much worth a switch to AMD).

If he can get one? then yes, obviously that's a great way to do it on the cheap.

There were some 3770 Xeon clones doing the rounds recently for really cheap (about £140 IIRC). That would do it too :)
