Question about US medical insurance

Most likely you would have insurance, so your actual cost would be anywhere from 0 cents to like £1600.

Any white collar job will offer free or cheap health insurance.

Doubt it, pre existing medical condition, and I would never be a white collar worker...

From reading this the American system sounds fine.

What part of the American system sounds fine?

I think when you have a capitalistic and free market system that even Dolph says is a complete cluster**** then you have to really consider whether it is something you should be using.

Why would it be a pre-existing condition? You have conti up us health insurance, you get sick or have an accident, your health insurance pays up. Simple.

Most full time employment gives you health insurance in the US and you can pay for yourself.

Health insurance in the us has many issues but the fact is for a vast majority of Americans they receive the best best medical care in the world, leagues ahead of the UK, and pay very little for it. It is only a small minority that have serious issues that make the press.

Well they pay 1500$ a month for a family of 4 on average... Wouldnt call that cheap.

Few family members are going USA on a long trip, ended up paying 200 pounds for travel insuarance which covers 5 million pounds medical expenses and 5m to return to UK... Apparently this is not enough, everyone saying should be 10/15 at least... Like seriously?? Nearly 8 million dollars not enough to cover medical expenses??

$1500 a month is an odd number. My health insurance costs $320 a month paid by my employer, would be $480 for a family and there isn't a single additional cost, no deductible . My wife's insurance costs her $20 a month and a couple of hundred is paid by her employer.

Overall, is is far, far cheaper than the National insurance tax and higher income taxes in the UK. Not only do you get stung by 10% ni you employer also has to match at even higher rates. That is much more expensive than a standard health insurance in the US.

Thats when you have a good employer that gives you that kind of insuarance... I seen a report on abc news recently, they said average american family of 4 pays 1500$ in medical insurance a month.

Non-deductible insurance is nearly impossible to obtain unless you are very high end worker. Most people will still dish out around 40 bucks to visit a GP from their pocket.

And Americans traveling to the UK need travel insurance with similar coverage. Heck, pretty much all health insurance covers at5 to 10 million etc. I do a lot of world traveling and. Y insurance has always had coverage up to 10 million.

That is just a number, the costs would never come close to that figure, it is just used as marketing. Thy could put a billion dollars as th coverage because they know no one can ever rack up that much.

Also don't confuse personal liability with medical coverage. Common to get millions of pounds worth of coverage that way.

No, a good employer covers all of that free. The numbers I quoted were if you had to pay yourself. A few hundred dollars gets you a HDHI, you can then setup up an HSA for pre-tax medical expenses. With an HD plan you will pay more (up to $2500 a year single, $5000 family) if you do have treatment outside of the free services (free check ups, gyno, eye care).

You have to be careful of what you class as medical expenses. In the US things like eye are and dental, prescriptions rugs, non-prescription drugs are all lumped into the same general category. E.g. My company pays me around $500 a year on glasses and contact lenses and another few hundred on other things I can bill them for, e.g. Condoms I can charge my company as a medical expense.

The other thing is that there are plenty of premium health insurance companies around that charge like 20-30k a year- that brings the average way up, the median is going to be much lower.

$1500 a month for a family is incredibly high. You could get a HD insurance for 5-6k a year, in the worst case you hit the cap at 5k deductible (and if no unexpected treatment occurs there would be no additional cost) so worst case you are under $1000 a month for a family. That is significantly less than NI payments for most families, BUT is a significant amount for the poor, hence Obamacare.

In the UK you pay suPpliments for dental, vision and prescription drugs.

So much drivel in this thread, some of you guys watch too many movies or read conspiracy theory websites and take it for what it is.
The health system over here is nuts! Expensive, but it really is miles better, and I am comparing it myself, having grown up and dealt with UK Dr's and hospitals to over here.

Both :D it's big business.
They are a business first and a hospital second. I can choose which hospital I go to, I can choose which Dr I use or pediatrician's office I use for my kids etc.
Customer service and standards are at the up most important aspect for repeat business! So.....that's what you get, fantastic customer service. The hospitals are gorgeous, way over the top, which leads to expense!
Bad - it costs a lot of money to run these businesses.

Sounds more like House MD than ER.
