Does anyone really care about this when playing a game? I've a tendency to play male characters if there's a choice, but race wise I'm never fussed.

It's nice to have the open though and in games like Saints Row it's great to have a play with it until you hit a look which suits your play style.

Come you you weird female playing guys.. get out the woodwork :p

I always tend to play female characters in MMO's, they tend to better to look at for hours and hours ;)

Doesn't really bother me either way though, although get some odd looks from my fiancée when she sees my playing a female character :)

I always pick a female character if I can. I don't want to see a guy on my screen if I get a choice of seeing a female ;) My missus used to ask as well until I told her no guys on my screen unless I am forced.

I started taking females in mmo's but I don't try to role play as a woman.

something about looking at a male characters ass all game doesn't appeal to me , not that I get aroused from female computer game characters

Used to play human female on older fps games quake/UT because the models were smaller and hence harder to hit. Females on MMOs gave me some benefit - easier to get free stuff/help etc.

Never had to decide again since retiring from AAA gaming.

I always play as a women when playing Oblivion and the like. Also I have modifications enabled so that I can see myself in the Buff not that I get aroused from female computer game characters. It just makes it more realistic.

Used to select female for Tribes, probably due to the myth they were a little more mobile.

MMo's it depends on whether there's a boob size slider if I'm being honest :p

For me it comes down to: model, animations, their "look" with gear equipped and more recently voice acting. For instance in SWTOR I had a female agent, as Jo Wyatt voice acting was incredible, but a male smuggler for the Han Solo experience. In fantasy MMO's if I pick a female warrior class, I want them to look like this, and not like this. So yeah, kinda varies for me, but I'd say thinking back about 60% - 70% of my characters are female.

Never a woman in any game that has melee, women are good for washing clothes and being smart, not hitting things with big sticks. I enjoy playing black characters though, really feel as though I can relate to them because I'm black myself.

No, really.

In all seriousness though, mostly prefer playing male but role females for agile/magical classes. Race wise, always pick the strangest/least human ones, because human is just so boring.

I am almost always male, and usually human, but not always. I very rarely play as Dwarves for example.

I have played through the Mass Effect and Dragon age games as a female, as they are quite different.

Women are the weaker sex so no thanks. Master Sex 7ft Barbarian ripping the place up thanks.

I would as a rule play a male character. However, I always play mobile characters I find them to be the best - some games this means you have to play a female.

Generally I tend to play female characters and whether male or female I tend to pick green clothing. It's a throwback to Quake 2 where the female character looked smaller to other players even though the hit box was the same. I tended to pick the green clothed woman for camoflage.

So now I tend to play a female character or at the very least some green on the clothes or armour.

Depends entirely on the options avaliable. Usually I'll choose in this order:

1. Race/species - determined by looks/animations and voice over.
2. Gender - largely determined by voice, but also will sometimes make an alt of the same race but opposite gender.

In GW2 for example I wanted to try a second class but only liked playing one species (asura) - so I made a second character with the same species but different gender so as not to be bored with an identical experience.

In a sandbox rpg such as TES I'll typically play only one character, so gender will be male.

In mass effect however, I prefer to play femshep because Hale does a great job and I think it makes a change from stereotypical male hero.
