Well I just(well about a hour ago) ordered the corsair obsidian 750d case(looking at going custom water cooling in the future, will be using the "corsair h60" for the time being)plus corsair ax860(not the i version with the corsair link thing) psu, I was looking at the seasonic version of it and also the seasonic-x 850w but went with the corsair for a few reasons.

1) it was the cheapest of the 3 being £149(yes I ordered from a compatitor, was 'only' like £4 cheaper than the seasonic-x 850w);

2) fits in with the colour scheme(red/black) of my build, the seasonic 860w platimum and the seasonic-x 850w have silver/platinum (for the platinum model) or gold(for the x series).

3) its platinum rated so more efficient than the seasonic-x 850w, the seasonic platinum is also platinum rated but is £30 more(well the competitor I ordered from doesn't have it but its £180 on ocuk).

However the thing that eating away at the back of my mind(now and before ordering) is the fact I've read quite a bit about the coil whine, but then I've read that seasonics own version of the ax760/860 have that issue as well. Not read anything about the x series having the coil whine.

If you don't have two big GPUs, then you are 360w over spec and thus £50 over budget. Granted it is a fab PSU but these days they are just not needed anymore, unless you a real need for it.

I over speced for the fun of it ;)

But on a serious note I prob should have included my specs in the op, I currently have 2x sapphire 6950 toxic(unlocked to 6970) but looking to upgrade to 290x/gtx780(initially 1 card then a second later down the line). I will also be going custom water cooling in the near future(currently have a closed loop one).

I haven't built the system yet as waiting on the case+PSU but the finished spec(before the GPU upgrade and custom WC) is:

4770k(will be overclocking to 4.5ghz if its possible on my current cooler)

Asus Maximus vi formula

16gb(4x 4gb) Corsair Vengeance 12800C9(1600MHz) 2years ago I bought 8gb(2x 4gb) but offer was good so ordered another kit to make it 16gb(4x 4gb)

Ocuk H2flo(unbranded corsair h60)

Creative SB titanium

2x Sapphire 6950 toxic

250gb Samsung 840 Evo(os drive) I had a 128gb Crucial M4 but that doesn't work so had to get the Samsung Evo

250gb Samsung 830 (game drive)

Corsair Obsidian 750D

Corsair AX860

Dell u2711

Window 7 Home Premium

Logitech G15 v2 keyboard

Razer Copperhead red backlight have the Logitech G9 but it seem to stop working couple months back so need to contact Logitech to see if they can do anything.

Logitech z5500 but these are being used with my TV in the lounge so looking at getting a 5.1/7.1 headset any suggestions?

The Corsair 860 is made by Seasonic.
The Corsair 860i is made by flextronics.

You bought the better of the 2 - All PSU's could possibly have coil whine.

The one thing to consider with PSU's is the point at which the fan ramps up. A lot of them have a fairly significant increase in fan speed as you go over 60% of the available wattage so a little head room on the PSU can make for a quieter machine.

Running a 750w Antec at the moment and using somewhere in the region of (a guess as my last 550w couldn't QUITE handle spinning up all my drives at power on) 570w peak and probably somewhere around 500w while gaming. The PSU fan is still easily the loudest part of my system.

Yeah I known the ax760i/ax860i aren't seasonic that's the main reason I went for the non-i(also because the non-i is cheaper), I've read reviews for the ax760/ax860 and they've been positive. First time I've read that all PSU are liable to coil whine.

The PSU and case arrived a little earlier(just before 5pm), the guy couldn't find the case at first(was hidden away in the back of the van it seems).

I'm using the Corsair AX860 in my PC and first noticed coil whine about a month after I put it in. I can only hear it when the side panel is off though so it doesn't bother me.

I tried to build the PC but the motherboard(Maximus vi formula) isn't lining up with the standoffs, looks like then I/o shield isn't going in fully. The I/o is padded, I could take the padding off but it was designed to fit with the padding. Had the same issue in the cosmos s.
If took me a hour or so first sorting through the screws that came with the case, looked on Google as there was only one standoff with the screws while the manual said there should be four(the case has built in standoffs but four 'standard' standoffs are meant to be included for whatever reason). Then took awhile getting the PSU fitted as there doesn't seem to be any 6-32 screws that I could see so had to use one of the others that came with the case.

An overclocked 980X and 2x 6970 in crossfire use max 550 W. A 600 W or higher PSU would be plenty. Also, PSUs are usually more efficient towards the top of their capacity. You're wasting money and electricity with an 860 W PSU.

Unless you're absolutely definitely going to go SLI 780s (which 860 W is spot on for) I'd swap it for a 600 W PSU. Saves money and power.

Anyway good luck with the rest of the build.
