We're going away for a long weekend to Nice this weekend. The first day will be Monaco but after that we're not sure. Any suggestions for places within a few hours of Nice to wander round, such as mountains, national parks or small villages? I'm not sure whether to head towards the Alps or the other direction towards...?:p

All of the Cote D'Azur is stunning. Gourge du vernon, (spelling may not be 100%) is the 2nd biggest canyon in the world, and only an hr or two from there.

Loads of nice little coastal towns too... Monaco is going to be the most upscale part..

Love the south of France... Enjoy.

There is a fair bit you can do in Nice.

I forget what its called, but there is the walk you can do that takes you up to the overlook of the entire area.

Given you are just there for a long weekend, you should find enough to do without having to venture too many miles.

Last time we went, we stayed in Cagnes-sur-Mer, about equidistant between Cannes and Nice. There's a medieval castle and village there (Haut-de-Cagnes) with some cracking little bistros and also a Renoir Museum.

Totally forgot that I went there!
Chateau Grimaldi. Its not too far to walk from the waterfront either.

The whole area of Nice is great to spend time to be honest. If you go in to the Old Town area and just work your way towards the hill/mountain you work your way to a nice park at the top with spectacular views. To be honest its a very easy place to just wander around, while eating and drinking good food.

*edit* To be honest I found Nice more enjoyable and relaxing than Monaco, but there was really no plan made for Monaco so it could have been more our fault.

Valebonne village near Antibes is beautiful and has the highest density of nice restaurants that I have ever seen

I used to live in Valbonne (went to the Centre International de Valbonne school when I was a yoof!) - not sure I'd call it beautiful :p Good restaurants though!

As for Nice, as someone mentioned the hills at the end of the Promenade des Anglais next to the port provide some great views. Some great restaurants at the top of the hill as well!

I don't really like towns so one day in it is fine by me. I love the south of France and know there is so much stunning scenery to go and see which is why I'm asking for ideas rather than just meandering.

Awesome suggestions guys, thanks. :)

I worked out there for a few weeks a couple of years ago... beautiful area. I quite liked Antibes when I was over there - was staying in Valbonne though made sure I checked out the other nearby towns on evenings/at the weekend. There was a good Moroccan restaurant in Valbonne and had a really nice freshly caught sea bass at a place near the harbour in Antibes... you can't really go too wrong with the food or scenery over there.

If you want to visit my old haunting ground and see some of the superyachts I used to work on go to Antibes. However the old town itself is great, with some lovely bistros and restaurants.

Juan Les Pins, Villefranches, Marseille and Cannes are worth seeing too.

Lac de Sainte-Croix is nice to visit too.
