I need to get rid of a sofa and maybe a fridge.

I can take it to the tip in a van but I'd need to get a permit from council. Or....

Could i park it outside the entrance to the tip and then carry it in? Its only a 100 yards and I've carried a sofa 1/2 mile before now. Is it allowed?

Don't mind getting permit but getting a van is as and when.... Tomorrow or next week. Won't know until the day.

Normally if you ring your council they'll arrange collection for items like that well ours does so assume yours might aswell.

Do your council not have a removal service?

Ours call it "Bulky Bobs"

Phone them up or book online and they will collect it FOC.

Most tips have lots of signs up saying no entry on foot (or all the ones I've been to.) A set of roof bars for the car will cost you the same as hiring a van for a day if that's an option?

Have done the same as OP. They have cameras inside the tip, but if you unload outside they'll (maybe) turn a blind eye.

Not sure if it's strictly speaking "allowed", just that you might get away with it :p

We once carried a bathtub we found a mile and a half before leaving it in a friend's living room. I say we, I was sat in it for at least half the way. Cheaper than a taxi.

Unsure why do you need a permit?

A transit fits under the barrier of my local recycling centre with a about a cm to spare. We cleared a cellar out the other week and took three Transit loads to the tip, they didn't bat an eyelid. Website advises to take a CT bill for proof that it's domestic waste just in case.

How much is a permit? I took a load of crap to a tip from my bro's house in Cheshire and when we rocked up to the tip they said you needed a permit for van but it was free once for locals and we could do it online so we just got one on the phone there and then.

I know my local council give us one free collection every year ( Manchester) they keep sending me leaflets and emails about it.

Council charge us £15 for collection of up to 6 items round here and the van permit is £20 per year for domestic use, but you're limited to only 6 tips on it.

If the sofa/fridge are still usable you might try the British Heart Foundation - they'll collect furniture and white goods foc for their charity shops.

Maybe just find a council estate and dump it. It amazes me what I see people who live in the one over the road from me just dump by the bins and expect the council to take away.

Council tips are a joke, i guess it depends on the local authority but the one in Blackpool is crap.
When i knocked the wall down in my kitchen i put about 30 bricks and 3 or for rubble sacks in the boot of my '01 feista and sent my mrs off down to the tip to unload it.
She asked one of the guys to help her unload it and he said he couldnt incase she was a builder and she needed to buy a £10 permit.
I can assure you, her skin isnt as firm as it used to be and her arse is atleast a third bigger than when we first met but she looks nothing like a builder.
And who takes money on a tip run on a sunday afternoon????
Long story short, she returned home with a car full of bricks and rubble i called the local ***** rubbish guy and he took everything from the car and all my other rubbish for £40.

**** the council and just pay someone.

Here you just go tell one of the fluorescent vested jobsworths in the portacabin that you're dumping non-commercial waste that you've borrowed a van to bring and sign the little book they have declaring that you're a Private Individual and not a Business, don't need a permit or anything.

Pretty sure our tip will take everything for free except asbestos and some other hazardous waste.
