Connecting LG Monitor to PlayStation 3 with a HDMI to VGA cable?

Recently moved my PS3 into my student place and bought an LG E2242C for it. Due to my low budget, I had to go for a monitor without a HDMI input, so the monitor just has the lone VGA port.
I've read in various forums about connecting up the PS3 to my monitor and was just told to get the image to display, I would need a HDMI to VGA cable, so I ordered one. So far I've had no luck with it, and I can't get it to display my laptop also. I was just wondering if anyone has done it or if it's not possible, what are my alternative solutions without spending a bomb on a analogue to digital converter?

Hdmi-vga cables only work if the graphics card supports digital out via vga, you can't use one to do hdmi output to vga input, as you mention you need an DAC

Hdmi to dvi should do what you want though

Ah, that sucks, I don't have a DVI port on my monitor, if I get a VGA to DVI cable and connect that to a HDMI to DVI cable, would that work?

I've been linked to products like the HDFURY 2 which cost £90+, but I have found some knock off versions on various sites for around the £5 mark, I can't link to them due to being competitors, but would these work within the same way?

no, the extra cable wouldn't help either as it is still a digital out on your computer to an analog in on the monitor

I very much doubt you can get a DAC for £5 - it is probably just a dumb HDMI to VGA dongle like the cable you already have

Sod messing around with adapters, sell the monitor or send it back if you've only had it a few days. Buy one with HDMI, avoid a headache.

Yeah, I've resorted to this, unfortunately I bought it used so I'm trying to sell it off on forums!
