Valve Says Steam Machines Won’t Be Exclusive to Nvidia

Long overdue to have a Gaming OS, we are forced to use a minimum of 8Gigs of memory on high performance Gaming PC's, not because we need it for the games, because Windows needs 2 gigs for it's background crap.

Carmack new the rules and stuck with OpenGL ;) Bring it on I say :D

steamboxes are just pretty pc's to go in the front room. Valve are pretty open about the fact they will let pretty much anyone build a box because at the end of the day they make their money from you buying games off them

I wish the steambox was more locked for hardware, less compatibility problems if they wanted to go low level access like consoles and not have a api like dx for it so it was compatible with a lot of diff configs. :( Would have helped devs a ton.

The are consoles no matter what... its Valve seeing how much lira Sony and MS make form consoles and are jumping on the band wagon... they are not PCs by any stretch of the imagination :)

read that there doing a cert type of program of hardware so you have at least a certain amount of guaranteed performance.

As to give the devs something to aim for I would think.

I'll find a link for you. :)

So valve are taking the on the console market by shunning the consoles greatest asset, lack of fragmentation?

The whole tier system is just a dumbed down minimum/reccomended spec list. Half the point of going with a console is all you worry about is getting xbox or playstation. Doesn't matter if you have the original 360 or the superslimhalo5elite, it will run and run just the same.

I don't really get the point of these. Are they for people that like consoles but are entranced by the extra power of PC's? They cost as much as PCs and use the same hardware, so why not just build a PC and have that greater freedom? Also, if you have a PC, it wouldn't be hard to turn it into a part-time steambox with a dual OS and a few wireless peripherals.

I'm probably missing something here, so please feel free to enlighten me.
