Are glasses supposed to make things instantly better?

I'm new to this. Got some glasses after an eye test at Tescos Opticians [erm is that bad?]. Got my prescription and the glasses came from Specsavers.

Now I have these things but when I try them on they make things worse not better. It all seems MORE blurry. Is there a 'getting used to' period? Because it's kind of counterproductive at the moment.

What was your prescription?

Not sure, it's in a drawer somewhere. Will have to dig it out later. One eye was nearly 20/20 and the other was less good, that's all I can remember.

When I've had new glasses its instantly corrected my vision the only thing that took a little getting used to was a slight change in positional perception (i.e. feeling like your slightly further above or closer to the ground depending on the change).

They should instantly make a difference, even if the prescription is slightly off which it will not be.

People unused to glasses may get headaches and other really minor side effects but your eyes will either say "Yep, this works" or "Nope, can't see ****".

Mine felt a bit weird at first (I normally wear contact lenses). I wouldn't describe it as blurry though, more distorted.

Yes this is what I'm thinking. I may need a second opinion. Ironically, wearing them now, my eyes hurt less but things don't look as good.

If it's blurry, I'd go check. I remember getting a pair when I was about 12, and immediately going "er, this doesn't feel right". The optician said it would take a while to get used to them, and not to worry. Everything through the right lens seemed to be at 45 degrees :p

Turns out I got the wrong prescription, I was just a bit young to be assertive about it.

I don't wear glasses but I'd imagine it's similar to looking through binoculars in a way.

I wouldn't expect them to be instantly worse

Yup, instant fix for me with short sightedness and astigmatism, if they are designed for reading only then they might suck for everything else, never had a pair like that.

But the getting used to everything feeling slightly different is odd, it's so apparent when I switch between contacts and glasses, I think once I got past -5 the difference between contacts/glasses started to get, dizzying. Literally everything looks bigger and closer when I have my contacts in, I don't wear them often, when I do everything looks weird, like everyone has put on a stone :p

When I put them in, no problem, when I take them out, I feel dizzy for 5-10 minutes.

It's easily possible for an optician to write the prescription down the wrong way around of a guy making the glasses to get them mixed up. If you were long sighted I would imagine reading to be sharper but generally looking around outside to potentially seem more blurry in the distance.

If you feel they make your eyesight worse, don't wear them, take them back and ask them to check the glasses and make sure they match the prescription and if they do, ask for a retest at Tesco's maybe(in terms of they should do it for free if they screwed it up, if you want to pay I'd double check elsewhere as it may be incompetence as opposed to a genuine mistake).

Been a glasses wearer for 20 years. When you put them on your sight should be immediately clearer and more focused. What you may experience however is eye strain as your eyes adjust to not having to "work" to focus.

If however, the lenses are just making things worse all over, theyve probably got the prescription wrong, it happens, just ask for a re-test.

They're supposed to make your vision better instantly.

You won't be the first person to get glasses that aren't right for them. You should go back to the optician, with your new glasses, and get another sight test done.
