GTX 680 to 290X?

Until official figures are out, nobody knows, but at a guess I'd say a 50% increase. Depends on pricing to see whether it's worth it. Another 680 might be a better option.

The 290x in terms of specs is almost the same as a 7990, and in FS (From controversial sources) is about 10% faster than a stock titan, when the 290x is stock too. This is at Extreme settings.

So yea, it'll probably be worth it. Especially when Mantle is coming soon.

Specs wise there is a big difference between the R9 290X and HD 7990

2816 v 4096 stream processors to name but one.

As to performance, nobody knows. The one thing we do know is the R9 290X won't get close to a HD 7990 in the same way as a Titan does not get close to a GTX 690.

Maybe i worded myself incorrectly. I was talking about Pixel Rate, which is for one double of a 7970.

Edit: May be incorrect though as its not released yet.

I am really looking forward to getting my hands on the 290X as I can run it on an identical PC to my other cards and compare them using the latest drivers.

What really annoys me when I read a review is some of the cards they compare the new one to were done months ago and are sometimes next to useless.

TPU tends to do that, 7970s at 925MHz with 12.11 drivers vs a 770 or 680 boost to 1150 with newest drivers. Ive seen this in the "relative comparison" graphs.

That's because boost is still stock.
You can overclock 770s etc too just like any card.
I don't understand why people think of boost as an overclock. Basically 'boost' is the cards 3D clock speed. It just varies depending on load, which imo makes sense.

Meh, its just an easy way for nvidia to win at stock comparisons :p

The 290X uses boost as well I believe.

@ the OP, I would wait it out and price wise, it is looking to be the same as the 780 and performance wise, it is looking to be around the Titan (same as most custom 780's are).

GTX 680 is very similar to a R280X (and 7970 and 770). It'll definitely be faster as it's 2 steps higher in the price ladder (290, 290X).

No one knows how much, but my guess it'll be like comparing a titan to a 680.

I am on a 680 currently and am interest to see what the 290X can do. will wait for extensive reviews and possibly see what custom cards come out. Stock blower type reference coolers can suck me!
