I know its dailyfail! but hey ho guys watch out for these around the house! DM obviously made it a sensationalist article but personally I don't give a tosh when I see a spider around so I'll try paying attention to these little guys from now on! :)

and WAT the heck with that cut.. from a spider bite? SERIOUSLY?!

hopefully not a repost, searched but couldn't find anything.

We were talking about this at work on Friday and looking up the really dangerous spiders - Brazilian Wandering Spider, Black Widow, Funnelweb etc. What was really surprising was the website we were showed pictures of bite wounds from these spiders and tbh they weren't half as bad as that pic in the DM. So what the hell is going on? severe reaction or NHS overreaction are two possibilities.

Also thats not from the bite, that's from surgery to remove venom, gauging by the second picture though, that looks like a step?, yes a step, so thats either a tiny step, or a big **** of spider

I think I saw one last year on the day Firefox was on TV early July.
It had a big black chunky body unlike anything I had seen before and I freaked out frantically scrambling to find a suitable object to crush it with.
No native spider apart from a tube? spider looked even remotely like it but those false widow images are a possible match.
 
I got bitten by what I believe was one of these doing some gardening last week. I have two wounds on my arm which are healing now, but Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week my forearm was very red and swollen. I had to take a bunch of anti-hystamimes.

Never had that kind of reaction to anything before, so can only assume it was one of these.

Checked out what my bites looked like, and it pretty much confirms it for me. Really bloody hurt and my arm was very sore until the end of this week.

This!!! I got bitten on the calf by one couple of months ago, just felt like a nomal mossie bite or something, turned into a huge swollen bruise about 6-7in around the bite over 3 days, was agonising and on the third day I struggled to walk.

By the 4th or 5th day it had dissapeared as quickly as it appeared, glad I didn't get it cut open or anything!

found a dead spider on the floor of my pantry cupboard though where I have insect killing powder scattered all over the floor it's my food ffs keep out!
 
Just put it into context, not everyone reacts the same way when bitten. He obviously had a very bad reaction, but then you see other people with bites who have a small bit of swelling that goes down shortly after.
 
What he most likely had there was compartment syndrome - you have to make a cut like that otherwise that section of the body swells up and constricts the passage of fluid in that area. If you don't make the cut they lose the limb.
 
Good old media scaremongering. Apparently the bite is no worse than a wasp/bee sting and is only "deadly" if you have an allergic reaction. Even the black widow's bite is not as bad as some people make out, i.e 1 bite and your a gonna!

Think I remember it being said that the common house spiders venom is more toxic per ml than any other spider, but they don't produce much.

What I find interesting about the article is the 'flesh eating spider' lol. Seriously? Sensationalist or what!?

Pretty nasty surgery he had there, good luck on his recovery.
