Battle of Hastings.

Well actually it wasn't if you account for calender switch from Julian to Gregorian but October 14th 1066 was the date of the battle (which is also wrongly named since it didn't occur at Hastings either )

What this is more about is the fact that October 14th is indelibly marked in my brain and always has been as far back as I can remember.

What I really wanted to ask is does anybody else have particular dates that for some reason they just never forget even if they've forgotten they remeber until the date clicks up on the calender?

Yeah, one thing I'm always amazed at is someone had the foresight to name the town where it took place Battle. How did they know a battle was going to take place there?

Or was it because it was called Battle everyone thought it'd be a great place for a mosh ;).
They were probably after getting a gander at the girls school and the locals were non to happy at the idea as they prefer to perv at the hockey skirts themselves :p

Things I remember about 1066 are:

A clip from a very good BBC program called "The Normans":

and a very funny book that kept many a schoolboy amused (including myself) called "1066 and All That".

Tis uncertain which of those was the king.... the guy with the arrow in his eye or the guy being killed by the knight

Let's face it, using the Bayoux Tapestry (another wrongly called thing, it's a bloody embroidery:p) as any kind of evidence for anything is a bit duubious as it's mostly just self agrandising propoganda for Bishop Odo who comissioned it.

I always remember in School looking at pictures of the tapestry and some kid shouting out "It didn't even hit his eye, it's in his helmet, look!"

:D

14th October 2000 was the date I was unable to revive my grandfather on his bedroom floor so yeah this date is pretty well indelibly imprinted on my memory :(

BBC4 touched on this in the recent 'Fabric of Britain' documentary dealing with embroidery. The programme opened with an explanation about how in medieval times the finest exponents in embroidery in Europe were the English and cited, among other examples, the Bayeux tapestry. What, I thought, wasn't this created by French nuns? Nope, it's now pretty positively established as having been created in a nunnery in southern England.

May 1st 1994 :(

Ayrton Senna??

If so in a very odd twist of fate for this thread I was doing an event at Battle Abbey (The location of the Battle of Hastings) when Senna was killed :eek: and was stood by the ruin of the high alter which is where Harold was reputed to have been cut down, when my mate told me :eek::eek: (how spookey)
