Hi,

I recently replaced my old school Samsung LE40M86 for one of the newer Samsung UE42F5500 LED screens. Something I've noticed recently is that you get this strange vertical banding/ghosting/clouding on bright screens.

This video below has the sort of effect I mean. I see it even more so on football with a full green pitch.

I find it really annoying lately but I'm not sure if there is anything that can be done about it or if is deemed 'normal' for LED?

Any ideas?

This is a byproduct of LCD (LED) TVs getting bigger and thinner. There are a couple of causes. The first is that the panel illumination is done from the edges. This makes it difficult to spread that light evenly across the back of the panel so that all the pixels light up at the same brightness. That causes the cloudiness.

The other problem is caused by the arms race to have brighter and brighter screens. If a manufacturer is already using the brightest LED lamps then they have to look at other ways to get a brighter image. One method is to use something to collect and focus the light so that very little is wasted in the dead space between the pixels. There's a sheet of optical material with vertical lenses. If these are slightly out of alignment when the screen was produced then this will cause vertical bands.

The bottom line is that this is all part of the manufacturing process. Once the screen is made and fitted in to a TV chassis then that's that. It's not fixable in the field. This is part of the reason why we have been banging on about plasma being a better choice. Every pixel is individually illuminated.

I know how you feel , i get a small amount when only watching blu ray , it can be very off putting , i might even return mine LED and change to plasma

plasma panels are by no means flawless, they have their issues too.

especially the panny plasma's which are regarded as the best.

£ for £ though you cannot beat a plasma for screen size, image quality and smooth performance.

Thanks for the info. Really useful. I think I might just have to live with it as mine seems a lot less than any i've found online.

Annoying though for sure.

Next set will need to be a plasma.

Did it bite the dust or decided for a newer tv? I have the 46" version. It's been barely used since 2008 until the past year.

My Sony KDL-40V3000 has a similar issue. It's basically the layers of the LCD panel coming away from eachtoher. Nothing you can do other than replace the panel or, more realistically, get a new TV!
