Jaguar F Type V6S vs Porsche Boxster S

Lucky choice to make, not driven the new boxster S, but the old one was a great drive though. Sure the new one steps this on even further, the Jags engine rules the show when you drive it, but it is a composed car, with great looks and a fantastic interior. However it is a big step up in price over the Boxster and the amount of space to put luggage would be the main put off, I know its not meant to be practical but there is barely any space to put weekend stuff let alone go away for a week or two driving holiday.

Very difficult to choose between the two. For me, having not driven either of them, I'm more inclined toward the Jag. However it's like when buying a smart phone, you need to try them both and see which one you 'gel' with.

Boxster will be more driver focused and clinical.
Jag will be more comfortable in every day use and is much prettier.

Swings and roundabouts... Try them both.

The jag is a truly beautiful car but I'm really not sure about jaguar reliability. Personally I'd save some money and get the Porsche which is still a great car.

I have driven both, the Boxster S is more refined but the F Type more fun, there is quite a price difference though

Seen a few have mentioned price difference...

Like for like spec, so PDK, PASM, PTV, Chrono pack etc, the Porsche is approx £63k, the Jag comes out at £71ish if I recall correctly.

So not a massive gap...

There's a review on YouTube where they say that about the 911!

911 for me is the take home choice everytime, again I'd say the Jag is better looking again and has more presence.

But for sheer driving involvement, fear factor, grins, communication the 911 is just un-rivalled I preferred it over anything I've driven including the new Boxster and Cayman or 997 Turbos. For me 997 911 GT3 and GTS/C2S are the best cars Porsche have made, followed very closely by new Cayman.

A Cayman R based on the new car I think though would be immense or if Porsche dared to do it a Cayman GT3, now that would be something special!

I'm a massive porsche fan but the jag would win over a boxter for me. Howver it's a much harder choice between a F type R and a 911

Hmmm, I really don't see why the 911 is favoured so much over a Boxster - surprised people still have a problem with the image of it!

Many claim the Cayman is dynamically better than the 911, and the Boxster is virtually identical to the Cayman, so surely that makes the Boxster a better drivers car than a 911 cab?

I think Jaguar are being a little cheeky trying to pass off the F Type as a 911 competitor... it lacks 4 seats for a start!

I went out to buy a new 911 for my wife and we ended up coming home with the new Boxster S instead. I feel the new Boxster is a better car overall than the 991 911, especially if you want a convertible. The 991 is a great car, it just didn't wow me. The Boxster on the other hand is the best car Porsche have made in quite a while (991 GT3 aside).

If we go back a generation though, the 997 is significantly better than the 987. I'd also have to say that while the 991 is good, it's missing something that the 997 had.

The F Type was put against the 911, only in its V8 guise as it's clearly not a Boxster competitor at $100k. Its real rivals are the R8 convertible and the 911 cab. Only the V6 models can be compared with the Boxster.

Why's that if you are a massive Porsche fan?

The boxster is a nice car but I feel the inferior is average at best unless you spend HUGE money on optional extras and even so I would expect more for the best part of £60k.

If I had a choice between the F-Type R and a 911 I think I would probably get the 911 as its just such ionic car and the shape of it does something for me.

Isn't the 981 interior nigh on the same as the 911?

The 991 and 981 interiors are almost identical and certainly not different in quality. There is no F Type R either, the top model is the V8S :)

Iceman - a lot of places suggest the V6S is the more balanced car and so the preferred choice over the V8... what's your opinion? Does the V8 feel a bit of a handful?

The V6S still sounds great and isn't slow by any means. I personally don't find the V8 to be scary but it definitely requires a lot more attention than the V6S. You can feel the extra weight in the nose when really pressing on but it's more the sheer grunt that makes it more "exciting".

Personally, I believe in the go big or go home mentality :p
