I've made a thread in here before, but as my test is on the 16th of Next month I thought best to make a thread on what car I should buy.

I have a nice new job earning a bit of money but am looking at around 3k all in. Car and Insurance. I have more money for sorting the odd issues I expect to find.

I've done a couple of Quotes and lookings for the following cars just add more unusual ones to the pot that I haven't heard of.

Mazda MX-5 1.8
Seat Ibiza 20V T
Alfa Romeo 147 2L TS (Would love a GTA but you know :p)
Ford Fiesta Zetec S 1.6

They all hover around the 3k Mark all in give or take a couple of hundred.

I know their all different cars practically. But really only wan't a car for myself. No ties/kids or anything else, Just something fun(ish) to cart myself around in.

Cheers guys.

First car if you're only just doing your test?

Buy the fiesta or a focus and enjoy the freedom. Then enjoy over the years moving up to bigger and better things. Everyone loves their first car no matter what it is.

How much are your insurance quotes? I passed my test in May, I'm 23 and my insurance is £1,680 for the year. If you're younger, I would imagine your insurance would be closer to £2k and if that is the case, just buy the best car you can find for a grand.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Fiesta tbh.

Buy the cheapest little runabout that's got long MOT, ideally tax too and save some money up. I can almost guarantee that you WILL crash it (or be crashed into).

If you buy something 'nice' and it ends up costing you a fortune you will despise it.

Unless your handy with spanners I would avoid an older Alfa 147 and that is coming from an Alfa fan.

The front suspensions are quite weak and although not majorly expensive to fix they do need regular maintenance. On top of that you have the cambelt service every 36k or 3 years which isn't cheap.

The GTA is a totally different car with different suspension etc. Saying that the 147 is fun to drive despite not being all that fast in 2.0 format.

Friend of mine has a GTA would like the alfa, am sort of alright with spanners but have some spanner friendly mates who would help out.

Apart from being an Alfa I have seen some for close to 900quid in what looks like good nick. The Grey leather looks nice too. Not especially bothered about it being quick on paper if its a nice ride and is comfortable. Although a bit of poke can't be bad. I have driven a GTA though. Do want.

If you have £3k for a car *and* insurance then I'm really not sure that Leon 20v Turbo's and the like are really the way forward.

Its your first car and you have 3k to buy it and insure it. Leave the sporty hatchbacks until next time.
