Hi guys,

I've been away from the scene a while, so need help choosing a card for a new Z87 gaming build... I've got approx £350 to spend and been looking at the GTX 770, would this be a good choice or is there better for the money ?

Also should I go for the 2gb or 4gb versions ?

Thanks :)

If it is just 1080p gaming, a single 280x or 7970 would be my GPU of choice. If it is 1080p 3D or higher than 1080p, i would go for crossfire or wait till the 290/290x are released.

IMO the premium for the 4gb version of 770 is just ridiculous. 2GB is too little to future proof for my liking but 350 quid for a 4gb 770 is crazy when you compare it to a 7970, which can be had for a fraction of the price for very similar performance and has enough Vram to last till your next upgrade!

Well its time for ifs and buts, if you'd asked at the weekend there would have been one answer but you've missed the boat on that. The Asus 7970 matrix platinum was £221 over the weekend but now upto £290.

for new gaming rig. i think we are on the edge of 2GB at the moment. so i would go for a 3GB+ card regardless which model.

one thing to keep in mind is that in a crossfire/SLI setup the memory dont add up. so even with two 2GB card, it doesnt mean you have 4GB in total, the memory stay with associated gpu. (someone correct me if im wrong)

The cards available with that sort of budget are possibly going to be shifting about a bit in the next couple of weeks, with AMD dicking about with the launch of their new flagship cards and a rumoured Nvidia 770ti, there might be some wiggle room in what is best for that sort of money.
If you can wait a week or so, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

Hmmm decisions :)

Im looking at either the msi gamer or asus pro, with the corsair ax860i and i7k. Im also getting a 3d monitor 1080p.

Thanks guys

Hi, if your getting a 3D ready monitor then I assume you are interested in 3D vision? AMD apparently does also have 3D options but as I know very little about them I'll leave it to others to respond.

If it is 3D vision you're looking at then a Nvidia card is a must, a 770 would certainly be capable but I'd definitely go for a 4GB over 2GB for the reasons XE11 has stated. If I were you, I'd wait just a little longer for the new AMD R9 290X to be released as this could impact Nvidia pricing.

If I've assumed wrong and you do not wish to get into Nvidia 3D gaming then I would seriously consider one of the new AMD models, the 280X when overclocked is I hear very quick and apparently snaps at a stock GTX 780's heels. I love Nvidia 3D gaming, it isn't for every one but it continues to blow me away, you just have to see Trine 2 in 3D to appreciate what I'm talking about. Racing games come to life as car cockpits go off into the screen, the depth is incredible adding to the realism. Not all games work well in 3D but those that do... WOW.

Sorry guess i should have mentioned that first, i didnt realise i missed it out. Yes its 3d gaming i wanted to try and like you say its supposed to be great :)

I will research more when i get home.

Thanks again
