*** iPhone 5S/5C - September 10th ***

Don't know why they're making you wait. You didn't buy the phone from them so they won't lose any money via subsidies. You should complain and make as much noise about it as possible

She said that because the phone was purchased sim free, that i need to have a payg sim in the phone for 6 months, minimum of 3 and they might try again.

Just been on the phone to apple, they tell me that the iphone 5s, even though it states its unlocked, will lock to the first network you use. :/

Is this one of the Car Phone Warehouse sim free handsets?

I thought the unlocked handsets direct from Apple were truly unlocked handsets.

If you buy a sim/contract at the same time as the handset in an Apple store it'll lock to that sim card as it's processed through the system.

However if you decline buying/taking a sim with the purchase, it'll be an completely unlocked phone.

So basically don't take a sim card/sim swap/contract when buying an iPhone from the Apple store and you'll have a sim free unlocked phone.

So I've been using my phone for work today, and I've had 3 people comment on how poor my outgoing voice has been. Couple of the guys said it was unclear, and sounded like it was missing certain frequencies - basically a bit flat or muffled.

I called home and left a message on the answering machine too, sounded terrible and really choppy. I have full reception at work, and calls made from my work S3 are crystal clear.

Going to do some more testing tonight, but I have a feeling I'll be raising a support case with Apple. :(

Does anyone know if they'll do the replacement phone via courier/send yours back in a UPS bag if the phone is under 90 days old? Or do I need AppleCare for that? I'm loathed to spend another £70 when I've just shelled out £550 and had to wait over 2 weeks to get it.

Dah.

edit - bit of reading about... http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/iphone-5s-problems/

It’s possible that your case is interfering with the noise cancelation feature. Try using the iPhone 5S with the case off, or head into Settings > General > Accessibility and turn Phone Noise Cancelation off to see if it makes a difference.

Naan_H - are you having similar beefs as a Neo Hybrid user?

If the phone is still within the 14 day return period they will send you a "retail" boxed device (cellophaned etc) rather than a white box replacement. At this point there will be very little difference between the two, considering they're all new - the only difference will be any changes that they've made in manufacturing (which I doubt will be any at this point, even with the gryoscope issues).

Otherwise, you have the option for an express replacement, where you swap at the door with UPS (IIRC) and they put a hold on your card for the cost of the device.

Worth noting that all I've heard are positive responses about call quality. People on the other end can hear me more clearly than on my Nexus 4, particularly in noisy areas (busy roads etc), and I must say that audio output during calls is much better too. Noise cancellation works well here. So what you're experiencing certainly isn't normal, though what the cause is can vary. Must say that signal is pretty poor on my 5S compared to the N4, however.

Has anyone here bothered with Applecare?

I cant work out if it is 2 years total cover, or 1 year standard, and then Applecare+ gives you an additional 2 years (3 total)

Clearly too late :(

They'll express replace your phone without AppleCare. Not sure how old they limit it too though.

Cheers for the replies chaps, and the detailed response lamboman. :)

I did some more testing tonight, grabbed the Mrs' 5C and gave her a call from outside (2 bars GPRS) and the sound was fine. We swapped phones so she could test too and I couldn't really tell any difference from the 4 I've come from.

I also removed it from the case and did both tests again, was a bit clearer so I'm guessing the case is messing with the noise cancelling or simply obscuring the lower mic. Either way, it was nowhere near as bad as what the guys at work were saying so I'm wondering if it's something to do with the mast that covers our office...

Not ready to go down the support route yet, will give the Mrs a bell tomorrow from work and see what she thinks.

So even though the expected delivery date for my 5S was the 22nd I got a message from the Apple store app and 30 minutes later I had my new phone courtesy of UPS.

Anyway, first impressions coming from a 4 is that it's great, I thought the fingerprint thing was a bit of a gimmick when I heard about it but it's so much better than faffing with a PIN. I've also taken videos of me shaking my face side to side in slow-mo and sent it to my friends and family, brilliant! :D
