Hi all, been looking at getting a tablet for quite some time for when I go on holiday and came across some of the lesser known makes and just wondering if anyone had any experience of them as they are quite a bit cheaper but have great specs.

I've wittled my choice down to 3 tablets and here's an image I stole from another site just with a brief overview of the specs but I believe the ifive X2 has bluetooth aswell so they are all fairly evenly matched bar the screen size and res difference.

I'm siding more with the FNF iFive X2 as it can do USB charging which I don't think the other two do and is a touch smaller which still keeping a 1080p res, however the U30GT2 is bigger and would make a nice film watching device when I'm on my travels and has many good reviews.

I know the software on them can be a bit of a pain the bum due to it being Chinese but I'm sure once you root it you can whack on different software due to it being android.

Anyone any thoughts or would I be just better trying to put the extra to a Nexus 7 2nd Gen?

I've got the Cube version and it's ok except for the latest firmware which is crap, waiting for a update.
Take a look at the Pipo M9 Pro version that has 1920x 1200 and GPS built in.

The Nexus 7 (2nd Gen) was an option but I just think the screen is a touch on the small side for watching films with the Mrs etc, I'd love to go for the Nexus 10 but its a heck of a lot more expensive.

The FNF, Cube and Pipo seem to be a good compromise compared to the more expensive Nexus 7/10. The compromises I'm mainly reading are software based as they all appear to be built very well from the reviews I've read and I think they are easily resolved by installing custom firmware/ROM's on them.

Just need to suss out which is the best buy out of these three really.

Do you have the U30GT2? What is the software like? Can you not install custom ROM's on it etc?

of course you can.. the simple fact is that there's 1000's of different tablet versions from chinese manufacturers so no ROM creators bother creating anything.. go with the bigger name like google nexus 7 and you'll have a lot of choice when it comes to ROM's go with no name turd from china and you'll be stuck with stock software..

Well i'm not massively fussed about custom ROM's as such, I was more after how easy it was to get rid of the Chinese apps on it etc and have it running as stable and as fast as possible on as close to stock android as possible.

Rooting it is dead easy and then you can use a number of apps to do what you want. I use titanium backup to delete apps.

The problem however is the stability of the stock ROM themselves, even if you root and remove the bloatware, there still can be problems and the chances of them getting an upddate to fix it is rather low. I would go for a more well known brand for the sake of stability and reliability.

Have you checked the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1? That should be within budget if you don't plan to spend much. Sure it may have less CPU power, but it's software should be more stable and is popular enough for 3rd party ROMs: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1602

Or how about the Galaxy Note 8.0 if you can stretch to it?

My Chinese Cube Talk 5H phone updates every Friday at 1pm you can't get better then that ;)

The only thing that's putting me off the Pipo and the Cube are the fact they don't charge via USB whereas the iFive X2 does. The Pipo has GPS too which would be nice but isn't really essential tbh!

I'm siding more with the U30GT2 to be honest, minor annoyance that it won't charge via USB but I can live with that.

Just looked on the bay and the 1.8ghz is wrong it's 1.6ghz and mine was £150 and I wouldn't pay the asking on the bay.

Maybe hold off a while?

Hold off on buying one now? Why? Is there something new due?

Where can I pick one up for £150? I've seen a few places with them for £170-£180. Could you send me the name of somewhere via trust?

Yeh it has hasn't it.

I've just found a place where I can get them from though. I can get the Cube U30GT2 for £162 and the Pipo M9 Pro for £164 - which would you go for out of the two? I can't decide which would be the best buy! Just read the Amazon reviews of the Pipo and they don't sound great compared to the Cube which has pretty good reviews all round, but the M9 Pro does look great in black!

Arrggghhh decisions!

Went for the Cube, left China the other day so should be with me this week hopefully.

Deuse - what's the best ROM/firmware/software to put on the device? Any good forums I should look at besides arctablet?

Which place is this if you don't mind me asking?

I'm not sure what version of Android the Cube runs on right now but it's site says 4.1.1 which is a bit old now, the PiPo unit offers 4.2.2 and OTA updates.

The Pro version has a HD screen in it too, there is also the M6 Pro which is 4:3 ratio and PiPo claim it has the same screen as the iPad with Retina Display.

I'm guessing you have it now,

How do you find it?
