Just bought a 690 and thin I've made a mistake

But a 690 and 7990 are just two GPU cards joined together and
Adding an extra card for a tri crossfire/Tri SLI setup don't scale very well..;)

Something to think about - thanks for that steer.
Do you know if that's a driver related/game related/some limitation of hardware?

Thanks for your input!

Im not sure what effect the extra vram has, but I game at 1440 and have noticed a few games that use over 2gb.
Civ5 for one averages 2.7gb vram use o.O, another is Arma3, that seems to hover at 2.2-2.3gb

I have a 690 and monitored afterburner on a 2nd screen when playing the BF4 beta, I was constantly around 1950mb and was VRAM limited in certain situations @ 1080p.

If your going be playing at higher res's then I would definitely go for something with a little more headroom.

+1.

There's a hughe difference to how memory is allocated to the available VRAM and then what is actually needed to have a fluent gameplay. What is used isn't equal to what is 'needed'. But you can always argue more is better.

Inb4 VRAM argument

Beaten by the marketing trap. I think it's lame how they advertise those SLI/xFire cards as having double their effective RAM.

7990 at £439 today is tempting although the ones I've seen sound like F16 jets and still worried about the stuttering.

Indeed.

I know it's my own fault (kinda?), just annoying as I thought I would be future proofing myself to a certain extent with 4GB of VRAM - I've been ordering from OCUK since 2007 as well so not like I'm new on the scene.

Anyway, live and learn!

I have been left with a sour taste towards my 690 after the BF4 beta.

I am considering selling it for either a 780 or going red and joining the ATI crowd, but unsure what to buy. In fact I can save quite a bit of cash just buying a 7970.
