I'll explain.
As a casual fruit eater I enjoy the likes of apples, bananas, strawberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, raspberries and many more. You will notice none of these have peculiar names taken from bird species. Setting aside the bird thing for a moment, none of the fruits I listed even have peculiar names in any sense whatsoever.
It seems the more exotic a fruit is, the "nicer sounding" its name is. Mango, pineapple, avacado, pomegrannate, passion fruit...these all sound delicious even if you've never tried them.
Which must mean the gooseberry is the least exotic fruit in the world and is therefore named after a common bird which is sometimes eaten for christmas.
The problem is hearing gooseberry does not lead you to think that gooseberries are nice to eat. I believe this does them a disservice as they are actually very nice to eat!
I think we should rename it so perhaps more people enjoy this delicious fruit without thoughts of christmas dinner.
