I'll explain.

As a casual fruit eater I enjoy the likes of apples, bananas, strawberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, raspberries and many more. You will notice none of these have peculiar names taken from bird species. Setting aside the bird thing for a moment, none of the fruits I listed even have peculiar names in any sense whatsoever.

It seems the more exotic a fruit is, the "nicer sounding" its name is. Mango, pineapple, avacado, pomegrannate, passion fruit...these all sound delicious even if you've never tried them.

Which must mean the gooseberry is the least exotic fruit in the world and is therefore named after a common bird which is sometimes eaten for christmas.

The problem is hearing gooseberry does not lead you to think that gooseberries are nice to eat. I believe this does them a disservice as they are actually very nice to eat!

I think we should rename it so perhaps more people enjoy this delicious fruit without thoughts of christmas dinner.

I thank you.

And yet the Strawberry does not appear to suffer from this alleged handicap!

As most people would no doubt rather eat a goose than straw....I think your concerns over the gooseberries name are misplaced.

Gooseberrys are amazing for cooking with, to sour as just a fruit.

I will be having a bush or two, when i get a house.
The problem isn't the name, its people are lazy and supermarkets never or rarely stock them. People have forgotten what to do with them.

A gooseberry fool, crumble or sponge. Yum.

Well you do use straw to grow strawberries. Maybe geese provide the best manure for their namesake.

I was weird the first time I ate gooseberries in the UK. I was so used to the cape gooseberry - they seem completely different fruit.

Had a gooseberry bush in the back garden when I was a kid, many, many moons ago.

A lovely fruit, not seen any for a long time!

If someone is so fussy as they won't try a gooseberry because it's named funny we should just systematically find these people, take them outside and shoot them in the back of the head because they're clearly complete morons and thus a drain on the human race.

I thank you.
