basically a transgender police officer is kicking off because she identified herself to the control room as a WPC and they said she sounded like a bloke

PC Chapman says that on the first occasion, in October 2012, the operator did not believe who she was, saying she had a "male voice".

In her witness statement, the police constable said: "I felt a combination of alarm and distress.

" I replied... 'I am a transsexual'.

"I felt very embarrassed and desperate. The incident took my breath away."

PC Chapman said she was left feeling "very distressed" that she'd had to "out" herself over a radio channel that was listened to by hundreds of officers and staff.

She reported what had happened but claims Essex police failed to carry out a full investigation and interview the control room operator.

Legal papers say two further incidents occurred in June 2013 when the officer was again challenged by control room staff who questioned her identity.

"I felt a growing sense of apprehension whenever I had to use the radio, concerned that there may be further, similar incidents," she said.

"The radio is also a lifeline at times and I should not have to feel hesitant or anxious about using it."

PC Chapman, who's a Police Federation constables representative in Essex, secured the backing of the federation to bring legal proceedings against the force.

now I had to laugh it she sounds like a bloke surely she expects people to challenge her identity the control room are well within their rights to challenge someone if they don't believe they are who they say they are.

whats the betting he/she ends up with a big fat cheque and the control room ops slapped across the wrists for their lack of understanding. I really do hate this stupid culture we have

Ridiculous, I'm sure once she explained that she was a transexual the person at the control room would understand why she sounded like a 'bloke'.

If all you have is the voice to go on, how would you know otherwise? Could be someone taking the **** for all you know.

For £3000-ish, as expected from claims like this, I genuinely think she's trying to raise awareness (money isn't *that* big). She is allegedly the only transgender PC. I don't see her as being a muppet to be honest.

The only thing I disagree is my personal stance of never to **** in your own rice bowl, in doing this, she may raise awareness and may pave a way for future transgender PC, but to do it via this method isn't ideal.

I regard myself as fairly progressive when it comes to LGBT rights (I support gay marriage, hate what is happening in Russia, got my blood boiling after watching Stephen Fry's recent documentary etc) but some of the modern complaints of transsexuals like the above are taking the ****.

If we take gay people for example, their fight for equality was/is over rights and being persecuted and possible killed by certain members of society. Yet most gay people I know will make jokes about their sexuality and their campness. As long as it is clearly not malicious they can laugh and be happy about their differences to me as a heterosexual.

But with transsexuals anything that points out they are/were biologically male and it's treated as "hugely distressing" and the person is called a bigot. Go up to a gay man and say in a monotone voice "You have sex with other men" and they will say "I know I do". Go up to many transexuals and say "You look like a man in women's clothing" and suddenly you've committed a hate crime.

The problem is pretense. With gay people their fight was over having their sexual preference accepted as 'normal' but with transsexuals the fight is about forcing everyone to collude in the illusion that they are not what they were biologically born as. It would be a bit like bald men who were wigs suggesting anyone who pointed that out was some kind of fascist.

Am I the only one surprised they allowed a TG to be a police officer?

No doubt they'll be getting a payout and the person in the control room will end up losing their job.

I read this this morning and don't see the problem, if she sounds like a bloke then unfortunately it's going to happen. It's not like it was malicious.
I also don't really see why she's up in arms about it considering she spent a fair amount of time openly admiting she was a transexual to raise awareness.

Am I the only one surprised they allowed a TG to be a police officer?

Why?

I read this earlier and my first thought was she's in it for the money / attention.

Of course the control room are going to question her. If they are supposed to be speaking to a female officer and then hear a "male" voice then the implications of that are huge.

They could legitimately think that someone has attacked the officer and stolen her radio.

Everyone is so precious these days. You can claim offence at almost anything and claim compensation

A lot of Transgenders are under the illusion that they can chop some bits off, take a few pills, dress differently and instantly become a Disney Princess oozing femininity. In reality they look just like a bloke with a wig in a dress, the only ones they are fooling is themselves. Hi Lucy! ;)

The control-room staff were simply doing their job, and I would assume they would do the exact same if a male officer had an unusually feminine voice.

She needs to man up.

Control room did the right thing from what I can see. Person is listed as a woman, operator doubts authenticity of radio user.... really can't see the issue. Now everybody who has read the article is aware that this person is a transsexual.

It is ridiculous, what had happened if they hadnt challeneged it, it was an imposter, and sent 2 cars out to a bunch of guys waiting with guns or similar.

Really don't understand how it can be offensive to call a TG a bloke

Similar situation if I move to England wave a st George's cross and talk with a southern accent I can't get upset if someone calls me scottish

I was born scottish and always will be scottish no amount of changing my appearnance of behaviour will ever change that

Same if you were born a bloke no amounts of woman's clothes hormones or lopping bits off will change that your still a bloke albeit one without a penis

Did lucy bee get into the force?

Ha!

People are definitely going to be more sensitive about gender identity than being bald. I can imagine it's probably distressing and she's just trying to raise awareness in all honesty. Going up to a TG telling them they look like a man in women's clothes isn't a hate crime, although it's extremely insensitive IMO.

I'm not sure what the control room were supposed to do, although they could have been given a heads up in the first place that the officer was TG.
