What are your favourite opening scenes to a film? Doesn't have to be your favourite film since as we've all experienced a film can start off well and rapidly tail off into oblivion.

For me it has to be

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Just the mayhem and sound of the surpise attack by Acheron on HMS Surprise really does give a horrific insight into the terrible experiece of fighting aboard a Napoleonic warship and hits you like a slap in the face.

**Edit forgot to look on youtube.

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

The opening seven to ten minutes was epic, it told an entire part of Tolkien lore, with battle, setting the scene perfectly for the three films to come.
Lucas took 3 films star wars 1 2 and 3 to actually tell less story than was managed in the very opening scene of LOTR. It was epic and superb and set the scene for all that followed.

My memory might be a little hazy but if I remember correctly it was full on action / fight scenes right at the very start. Possibly with blokes in a spa in the middle of winter. Was slightly tongue in cheek.

I love the opening of blade runner

I just loved how futuristic it felt when I first watched it, yet down to earth at the same time, like this could happen in my life time.

Also the first scene in Star Wars Ep IV the never ending star destroyer was just brilliant and totally captivated me when I was 7-8 and still gets my hair on end

Contact. Hearing the various songs being played from 1997 all the way back to the beginning of the very first radio broadcast. Whilst zooming out from Earth, through the Solar System, Milky Way and eventually all the Galaxies disappearing in the big black ether. Just wonderful! :)

I remember Welcome to Sarajevo having one of the most powerful intro's to a film I had seen at the time.

And Saving Private Ryan of course.
